Squealing brakes

We have a 2017 Swift Fairway 580 caravan and the brakes squeal on it every time we go out with it.

It was supposedly fixed as a known warranty issue from Alko by the dealer changing the brake shoes for new ones. Unfortunately this 'fix' only lasted until the caravan was out of warranty.

The van now squeals every time I use the car brakes and it has finally reached the point where I need to get it fixed, whatever that takes. The caravan has been serviced every year and the brakes checked and cleaned out at each one.

I know that this was a common issue on all Alko chassis from around the 2017/18/19 period and wondered if anyone had found a solution to it.

Several causes and several solutions - all listed on line. Just ask Google why brakes squeal. A sensible mechanic can sort it and solve it.

Ours has a squeak that comes and goes. We just live with it but I know it can be embarassing if it is loud and irritating if it is constant.

My understanding is that Alko changed the supplier of the actual brake shoes.  These I was told had some fine metal shavings embodied into the shoes which was meant to extend their life.  Unfortunately most of these "alternative" shoes end up by badly scoring the actual drum with the result that any new brake shoes you fitted, would continue to squeal.

I cured this by getting new shoes and drums fitted and whilst the squeal was not 100% eradicated, it was many many times better and thus justified the £600 plus cost.

    Hope this helps.

I wish. Our 2019 Challenger 580 is on its 3rd set of brakes (drums and shoes) and I’m expecting to have them changed again next year at a cost of around £1000 😬
