We would like to take our caravan to Europe next summer but, after say three weeks, come home without the van then go back a couple more times and eventually work our way down to the Costas and overwinter there. Anyone any experience re leaving a van in storage or at a site for a few weeks ?

Will your caravan insurance cover that? Many won’t.

When your van is in the UK it will be covered by your UK insurance. To and from Europe and whilst touring in Europe it will be covered on many policies as standard and if not as an extra up to a set number of days. When left unattended at a European site surely you are paying them for storage and this should include insurance cover provided by them.

I would check with the site for clarification and then get back to your insurance company.

The problem I can see is the site may say the van has to be registered abroad for the insurance cover to be applicable, but would that only be relevant if the caravan was on public ground?

All the storage sites that I have come across abroad state that the caravans there are stored at the caravan owner’s risk unless gross negligence can be proved on the part of the site owner. Basically one is only paying to have the caravan parked there.

Also be aware that most sites on the Continent offer very little in the way of security.
