We stayed at a club site 2 years ago that had just started using these industrial bins on my first visit I was dumbfounded they had been placed under a large tree on the grass, mud and tree roots it had been raining and I had difficulty finding my footing due to the slippery conditions the lid was very heavy and it was difficult to hold open put my rubbish in and hold my balance, this was a non facilities site the shop had closed so the office was only open between 1pm and 5pm so I had to wait until the following day to see a staff member on speaking to one about the totally unsuitable location of the bins and the risk of injury the reply was a shrug of the shoulders and it was the area managers decision where to put them as she would be the one held responsible in case of injury this was naive to say the least, I wrote to the club and complained and questioned whether a risk assessment had been done recognising the age and abilities of most users the answer was a thank you and we'll look into it, I suspect mine is not the only complaint so should a injury occur using these bins a prosecution should be straightforward.

Last year at Chatsworth the wardens had propped open the lids of the large waste bins, so as long as someone was able to drop their rubbish into the appropriate bin they should not have a problem. However, I realise this may be an issue for someone with limited mobility.

Surely most of the people staying on a site are able to walk to the place where they can deposit their rubbish into the relevant bin. Now that we are trying to reduce the amount of plastic waste that is generated, an extra few yards to place our rubbish into a communal bin can’t be that much to ask.

Having said that, I have seen other instances where there are traditional bins, and people have just dumped rubbish into the first bin they come across.

I don’t think it’s the walk to the bins KB, more that the big industrial bins have heavy lids to lift.

If it was me, I would talk to staff and ask for help. If the help wasn’t forthcoming, I would double bag my rubbish and leave it by the big bin. If staff complained, then I might take things further, but we aren’t huge Club Site users, so it’s not a huge issue for me.

I don’t think the Club will revert back to the bins all over the site where the change has been made. But it does need to communicate with those who have a personal issue. Likewise, those with an issue need to talk to staff.

    4 times I typed up a response ! Then I can't post it , it disappears.!

Thank you for the helpful comments from those who read my comments properly.   I did speak to the Warden in the morning he said to leave my little bag by the bins or ask a Warden.  Yet often the office is shut they're out on site. I did point out it was windy and.my bag would blow away or be attacked by vermin or Gulls.   He said my recyclable wheelie bin liners I buy at home will not be strong enough? The bins were locked so only 2 were available which were crammed full.So they clearly need more open.  I wouldn't ask someone passing by, maybe going off for a walk they don't want to be touching dirty lids and have to go and wash their hands.  I also think wardens going round sites twice a day is good to ensure everything is as it should be.  Perhaps they need electric vehicles or similar to save fuel.

I did like the concrete steps idea.

On the lighting Issue. I do as I said carry a torch but with all lighting bollards switched off in the dark I cannot see who or what is about.  If I don't make it back to my van no one is going to miss me not returning! All it needs is approximately 1 in 3 bollards lit with energy saving bulbs.

The next site had both dustbins and a few lighting bollards working.  Sanity prevailed!  Now after typing this 5 times I hope it posts instead of disappearing into space!

Sorry not for us. First experience was at Sutton  on Sea. Having found a pitch somewhat at the edge of the ste but not too distant from the service block and set up. We then found out that the waste services is now near the site entrance. CAMCC now expect us to do the work of the staff and transport our rubbish half a mile in what? All we had were a few small rubbish bags. Result was we took all rubbish only when we left the site in the car. Which worked out to be about every 3 days or so. God knows what vermin and pests are going to be attracted if this carries on.

I think the solution is simple provide a system that is safe and does not discriminate against our disabled or elderly members.

Put a normal bin at the refuse area and empty it into the large bins regularly.

Perhaps all who complain to the site staff, head office etc without response should flag up that any discrimination of any kind is not acceptable.

Whilst I appreciate the reasoning around this policy, the club do not seem to have considered the problems the older and infirm members have, I am currently sitting in my awning at New England Bay, Dumfries and Galloway, looking out at the sea, sun is shining, warm what a perfect view you might think, but no, during the closed season, they have had built a concreted fenced area large enough for 3 or 4 of these industrial sized bins (see picture),

    image.jpg

We were here on the opening day of the season, and the service area still had the little bins at the back of the taps and drains, so when we have returned, this week we learn that there is now a centralised dustbin area by the reception, and they don't appear to be going to use this concreted / fenced area, what a waste of our money. The other gripe is, some of us getting on in years, start suffering with medical complaints, such as osteoarthritis, have difficulty in walking any distance at all, and unable to walk to the bins by reception, as we are pitched some distance away, I tried taking the matter up with the on site staff, but was just told that it was club policy, so now, I just leave the rubbish bags outside at front of van, open to attack by vermin and weather, smelling, and looking awful, until we leave next Tuesday, as neither of us is able to walk the distance to the rubbish bins at reception.

Don't you go off site at all? You can dispose of them then rather than leave the bags lying around.

with regard to my previous post, I have taken a photo of the notice posted inside this concreted, it says they use 7000 black plastic bags a year in the little bins, bearing in mind, people normally put their rubbish in a plastic bag before putting it in why is there a need for a black bag anyway, apart from this, why can't the wardens, on their little tractor, with a trailer on the back, collect these little black bins, drop off an already emptied one, and take the other to the

bin area and empty it, ready for use the next day. I would be interested to know how much it cost to build the concreted / fenced area, and how many years worth of black bags it would paid for.

Have you discussed this with CAMC @Antp ? The club probably won’t look at your comments posted here.

can’t see a problem with the change , if you’re fit enough to caravan ,you’re fit enough to take a bag of rubbish to the recycling point

Or put it in your car and drive there

Have you ever or now have osteoarthritis in your hip/s, don't knock it till you've tried it. I have a motorhome, so no car, and everytime I need to take rubbish to bin, would have to unhook it.

If only things happened that speedily😄.

Errr, that’ll be members' money paying for it.

Well they have, the club has stated that if anyone has problems with using the bins let the wardens know and they will collect your rubbish and/or leave the bags by the large bins. Have you let the wardens know?

As for the cost to build the concreted / fenced area, and how many years worth of black bags it would paid for

I fully support it, mainly because of the environmental cost if the choose to keep things as they are.

I think there are questions about the compound built but not used. These are the sorts of things that annoy members. As for a central bin point, so be it. I can’t believe there are many who don’t leave the site at some point over a stay of several days. How much rubbish to people have? We fill a small bag with rubbish over three or four days and would dump on leaving. Having stayed at New England bay the issue we had was with the elsan points which require you to lift the cassette to quite a height in order to empty. We normally empty when the cassette is half full, we certainly couldn’t lift a full cassette.

I personally think having centralised bins away from the main camping area is a great idea. No longer having to put up with the noise of members emptying their rubbish (especially glass) after dark. As others have said if members can’t walk those extra few yards then maybe this is not the hobby for them. As for the weight of the bin lids, they take no more effort than lifting a half full toilet cassette.

We are still in favour of the central bin area with the larger bins, usually near the entrance, but those saying that if you cannot walk “ those extra few yards” then you should maybe not be caravanning or motorhoming, could be a bit more tactful !

Firstly, it is usually a lot further to go than a few yards, and unfortunately some of us suffer from arthritis and joints can be painful and make walking even a short distance very uncomfortable, even impossible. Waiting times for joint replacement can be very long, so we just have to carry on as best we can, and we still want to have holidays.

We can still do that as at present it is only my OH who has joint problems, plus we go off site frequently and taking the rubbish to the gate when we do so is not that onerous. We have by necessity adapted what we do to fit our situation.

As long as I can still walk far enough, and lift enough weight, to empty the toilet cassette we will continue caravanning. We now request a pitch close to the service point, which makes things easier.

We have mostly stopped using the silly little bin on the caravan door for rubbish, and have invested in 2 substantial folding bins, with good hinged lids, from Aldi, to use either in the awning, when the family are with us, or just one in the van when it is just us. These take pedal bin liners, so big enough for 5-7 days, and could be left outside if necessary.

One is for recycling which is separated afterwards where necessary, the other for residual waste. The liner used to take away the recycling then becomes the new liner for the residual waste bin. When just the 2 of us, the recycling goes in the little caravan door bin, and the main waste bin sits in an otherwise unused corner of the van.

Works well and means that trips to the big bins are infrequent.

Well said @KjellNN - I was going to say something similar but not along the lines of not being tactful - more about being downright insensitive! I struggle to walk very far, these days - and like you - when on a 'formal site', request a pitch close to a service point - or book a serviced pitch if we can get one. Ros has great difficulty in lifting her arms above shoulder height - so we both struggle.

I've made a few significant (and often expensive) changes to our van in the last couple of years to allow us to continue caravanning for a little longer - and I'm determined to carry on for as long as we are able because we enjoy it!

Whilst for the majority, I guess, centralised bins are probably not an issue but for others, they are - and perhaps there are one or two on here who ought to be a bit more understanding.

Whilst I didn't have these problems a couple of years ago - no one knows what's round the corner - so a bit more sensitivity would go a long way😊

I tend to put myself in the OPs' shoes and think what would I do. For me there would be no pleasure in trying to carry on if I or my partner could not do the simplest of chores. I would not expect a site to help either so I would be looking at alternative forms of enjoyment. Camping in all its forms is a health hobby to pursue but it does demand a certain amount of fitness. Eventually our health won't be up to it and there comes a point where it is sensible to give it up.

as for the weight of the bin lids ….. think about it, when emptying the rubbish we lift the lid with one hand and put the rubbish in with the other hand. When emptying the cassette we hold it with two hands. The problem is not only the weight of the bin lid but the height of it .

For those who think that we are just having a moan, try lifting the lid no higher than shoulder height and if you are nearer 6 foot in height bend your knees. I know that head office say to ask a warden for help but there aren't so many wardens on site now. When I went to Malvern Site they have one of the old smaller bins for rubbish along side the big bins and for me it works.
