Morn Hill to Winchester cycling
Hi
Does anyone know if there is a reasonable cycle route between Morn Hill and Winchester, and also what Winchester is like for cycling ? My wife isn’t comfortable cycling on busy roads.

We stopped there prior to catching the ferry and although a nice site, is not very good for cycling or walking directly from it. The B 3404 which is an almost straight run into town carries a lot of traffic and the minor roads that can be accessed close by, do not provide a viable route. There are no footpaths. We don’t have bikes, but even if we did, there is such a good bus service into Winchester, I don’t think we would take them. It’s the number 64, every half hour and can be caught a 5 minute walk away and there are pavements that far.

I tend to agree with Steve. The B3404 does have a footpath on one side of the road but its not that wide for walking let alone using it to cycle (even if that were allowed?) Given what you have said about your wife's dislike of busy roads I can't see that she would be very comfortable. Of course the road is not the only question, Winchester is a very busy place and once there you would be in quite heavy traffic. The City is about two and a half miles from the site so would walking be an option? We used the bus to explore when we were last there in 2022.

Leave the bikes at home. Uber is available all around Winchester.

Personally speaking….If I could afford something like £75000 for a motorhome I’m sure I could afford a taxi into town rather than walk to a bus stop and wait for ages in tne rain. Not my style at all !

Well one it might not be raining and two the buses have trackers on, so if you download the App you can be sure you won’t have ages to wait. However, everyone has there own way of doing things, but not sure what the cost of a MH has to do with that choice.

Taxi's are fine near large areas of population but the further out in the sticks you get the less reliable they get, and I am talking from experience. We have had a couple of instances where we have either failed to get a taxi (Barnard Castle) or had to wait several hours in Abergavenny in the small hours of the morning to get back to Brecon as Margaret was taken to hospital by ambulance. I would also say that we need people to use local buses otherwise they will be taken away. Even with a free bus pass the Government pay towards that use of the pass, so using the bus is also good for the locals.

Personally it’s not a case of it being free, we would use the buses in preference even if we had to pay, as we do in Scotland and Wales. The few times we have used taxis the driving standards have been dubious to say the least. However, perhaps we have just been unlucky.
