I'm also interested. I currently tow with an Audi A3 1.5 petrol but my van is a comparatively lightweight Eriba at typically 1350kg.

When time comes to replace I'm going to start my search with the Mazda CX5 and Volvo XC40.

    hi Chrissies

after lot of research went down the cx5 route in soul red , a normally aspirated 2l.

loved the car…really excellent quality. Checked with towsure which gave it a safe and legal match to the van we wanted to buy .

went to Dorset and picked up van, then the cx5s shortcoming became obvious…not enough grunt ! Without revving the hell out of it. When I did my tow car comparisons I looked at BHp

and kerb weight but I should have looked at torque, which on our cx5 was way off its rivals.

we thought long and hard about what to do. We loved the car and didn’t want to change the van. So we bit the bullet and exchanged the petrol for a diesel cx5. The spec was better including hud and a reversing camera focussed on the towball. The towing experience was great and though it cost us we are happy for the long term. Hope this helps ?

Depending on the weight of your van and budget, perhaps try looking at a HEV or PHEV? I drove diesels for 35 years, towing for 10 and my RAV4 PHEV is just as good and often better than any diesel.

Thanks for that did u get the 2.2litre diesel Mazda CX5 done some research and petrol just doesn’t seem the way forward for us as we tow a Bailey unicorn Vigo did a match with a ford kuga petrol and said it wasn’t a match only thing putting us off another Mazda diesel is we have had problems with the dpf in our Mazda cx7

Just the feedback I needed, so it looks like the Mazda will not be on my list. I'd always thought the torque was important and noted how low the Mazda was. I seem to recall Lutz? correcting me on this though and saying the bhp is what counts.
