Villages by the Sea
I don't know if anyone had discussed this series as the search facility on this forum is sadly lacking!
We have been watching these 4 series by archaeologist Ben Robinson on Iplayer, and have thoroughly enjoyed it. Although we have visited most of those shown so far it is an eye opener with regard to things we have missed and has inspired us to revisit them. It certainly provides a grand insight into our past and would make a super tour!!

Its been on BBC2 at 7.00pm one or two evenings a week. Brilliant little series and as said so much to learn from places that perhaps you wouldn't think had much of a history. My eldest son studied Archaeology at University and now works in planning and his speciality is the Heritage side of planning so when the presenter points out various aspects of the design it resonates. I wonder if Millie watched last nights episode as it was in NI on the shores of Lough Neagh?

Have watched most of this and past series on iplayer, enjoyed them immensely. Some of the villages we have visited, it has also given us ideas for some we would like to visit.

We are gradually working our way through them on iPlayer. Decided to watch the one on Ravenglass as we had stayed there. As interesting as it was, and half an hour is not a lot of time to get everything in I was a little disappointed that nothing was said about the narrow gauge railway which I would have thought was an important part of the development of the village?

There's also the omission of Lindisfarne Castle from the Holy Island episode. I wonder why such a prominent feature, which could be seen on lots of the shots of the village, was not talked about.

I did wonder if Industrial Archaeology was not his field but then in another video he dealt with that element in some detail. I could be missing the point but it seems as though he starts with the foundation of any settlement, concentrating on that and why it was settled, and then explores how the settlement developed from then on. Perhaps his emphasis in the ancient roots of a community rather than what came after in more modern times? I don't want to sound too picky and certainly don't want my comments to put people off what is a lovely little series. I need to watch a few more to put my theory to test!

It’s made us visit one or two places and look at them in a different way. I don’t think that the episodes on Bamburgh and Warkworth concentrated On the two most obvious features, the castles, but more on the actual villages close by. One we enjoyed was the Suffolk village built as a holiday resort for the well to do. We had a look around last year. Thorpeness.

The one on Thorpeness was broadcast last night. Very interesting, can't see it getting planning permission now! Only thing missing was a little campsite.

Plenty of CLs not too far away, David. I think a caravan park on the village would completely spoil the place, as it is busy enough these days, and by it's very nature it isn't really holiday destination for the hoi polloi.

I wondered if they were repeating some episodes. We visited out of curiosity really. It’s only the odd buildings that are of interest, and I suspect it gets very busy. We enjoyed a walk around (parked MH easily but it was October) but it’s not somewhere we would go back to see again I don’t think. Orford and Aldeburgh much more interesting in our opinion.
