Suggestion needed for a stay near Fort William

Hello.

Planning a trip around Fort William next year.
Looking for a caravan site where we can stay for up to three weeks.

I have used Caravan & Motorhome and Pitchup.com sites to find a site. It appears that on Pitchup .com almost all the sites can't be booked for next year.
We find a lot of various reviews from very good to bad for most of the sites we find.
We thought about "Bunree Club Campsite" in Fort William but put off by some of the reviews.
Has anyone any experience of sites around the Fort William area, whether CL or club sites, that they would recommend. ?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Phil.

Personally I wouldn’t discount Bunree. We stopped there in September 2022 and really liked it. The main cause of complaint, on a few  reviews, seems to be the facilities block. We did use it exclusively in 2022, as the shower in our MH was non functional. As far as we were concerned it was clean, functional and not an issue. As far as the CDP was concerned, my only complaint was the usual one of the breather taps that soak your legs.😂

Although we've travelled this way, we've not taken the caravan up to Fort William.  If you are definitely not considering Bunree, then it may well be worth looking at UKCampsite.co.uk and do a search of the area.

Just a little heads-up: The road that follows Loch Lomond from Tarbet up to Glencoe (A82) is not brilliant for larger vehicles.  It may be worth considering the A9 up through Perth and to cut across to Fort William...

We really liked Bunree when we stayed there in September last year.  We didn’t use the toilet facilities so can’t comment on that but the site itself was good with a brilliant view.  It’s about 10 miles away from Fort William.

Like others, I did not use the facilities, but my review of Bunree, last visited almost exactly one year ago, included these comments:

It is a true gem and must be among the top-most sites for surrounding beauty in the network.

It goes without saying, then, that this is a wonderful site with the most marvellous outlook over Loch Linnhe. It is hard to find a negative about the site – the only one perhaps being that it is rather cut-off from civilisation for those who need facilities close at hand.

Bunree is wonderful and provided the facilities are adequate, if a little tired, it is well worth considering.

My choice would be Bunroy rather than Bunree.

It has a score of 9.7 on PitchUp and sites don’t often hit higher than that. It’s a 20 minute drive into Fort William, but motorhomers who are concerned about parking can go in by train

Like others I am a fan of Bunree which has a beautiful location overlooking the Loch. We tend to use our own facilities so don't pay particular attention to the likes of toilet blocks but from what I recall they were similar to many other Club sites of similar vintage. They will be kept clean and functional even if they don't look so modern. From memory the block even has a drying room. There will be lots of other sites in the area but there are not many, if any, that have a similar location to Bunree. The Coran Ferry is about a mile from the site and makes a nice little excursion by foot.

I echo all the above comments about Bunree, and btw the picture when 'essential maintenance' is on is Bunree so anyone can see the location is just outstanding.

One point though that the club can't do anything about but should be mentioned is the midges that can occur in certain conditions (usually wet, damp and no wind) and months. These are not a minor inconvenience when it's really bad.

Apart from that a great site.

In the past we have stayed at Bunree, but it was many years back, we found it fine.  These days it is out of our price range.

We have also stayed at the Linnhe Lochside site, which was very good, but again it was a while back.

The Glen Nevis site also has a good reputation, but we have not been there.

Last time we were up that way we stayed at the CCC Glencoe site.  We use our own showering facilities so like DK are not much bothered by what is provided.

If you want to avoid the road along Loch Lomond beyond Tarbet, you could go from Tarbet via Inverary and head for Oban, but branch off north over the Connel bridge and up to Fort William.  We just used that road last week with our twin axle, and used it last year too, it is a decent road and scenic.

Glen Nevis is a nice, well run site, just about walking distance of Fort William, a restaurant/bar adjacent and at the bottom of the footpath up the "hill". We like it there. You can also pick your pitch when you book IIRC.  And their cancellation terms look vastly better than the clubs.......!!

Unless they can ever fix the cursed Corran Ferry, we will be staying there next trip instead of Bunree !

    Hi David,
Thanks for the heads up and the website.
Going by peoples comments I think we will use Bunree.

My choice has been the Glen Nevis site. You have options of Grass/Hard standings. EHU or not. (Long summer nights and if off site in MH all day a big saving). There is a shop, restaurant adjacent and a lovely walk into FW. Bus service also past the site. Very clean well run commercial site, broken into small units.

Love Bunree site but we also stayed at a site on the river in Glen Coe, think it was called Red Squirrel if memory is correct.beautiful setting, facilities basic but totally usable and a short walk to pub and access to the big hills. Just remembered, no EHU and possible only for motorhomes but that’s no problem for a few nights for us and well worth the stay for the stunning locality.

I think I would prefer that one too,  much  less driving than from Bunree to access the area  north of FW.

I just read the other day that the ferry is now back in use after a big overhaul.

Free to use for foot passengers as far as I know, but of course vehicles incur a charge.

We've used a private site at Auchindarroch, it's not Fort William but near enough to explore the area. Easy to reach either Oban or FW.

It won't break the bank balance either like Bunree will, OK it's a nice site but expensive.

We also like North Ledaig site at Connel which has great sea views. Not far from there to FW.

If you like trains it might be worth booking a day trip on the heritage steam train from FW to Mallaig called the Jacobite. It goes over the Glenfinnan viaduct, great day out but book well in advance as its very popular.

I note you mention 3 weeks, that's a fair amount of time in one place, if you use Bunree that will be expensive not only on site costs but fuel as well. From memory I don't think the area would hold my attention for 3 weeks but maybe you like to just sit around the site. Time of year is a big factor to with Bunree if going after mid June there will be midges.

A place not to miss if in Glen Nevis and you dont fancy the Ben, is to drive to the top of the Glen into the car park. Go out at the top end through the gorge and you enter a hanging valley with spectacular waterfall. Carry on and you could end up in Carrour but thats a long way. If a trout fisher you cant beat Loch Lundavra again out of Ft William up another Glen. Eating must be  THE Crannoch.

Going by many suggestions I'm going to book up with the Glen Nevis site. They take bookings from the end of November for next year.
Thanks to all who has helped me for this trip.

    Hi Everyone.
We eventually stayed at the Glen Nevis Caravan and Camping park in Fort William.

We stayed there for 17 nights and used it as a base to travel out daily to various attractions.

We done some of the Ben Nevis trail. Cairngorms Mountain Trail,
Glenfinnan Viaduct trail. John o'Groats, Seal cruise. etc

By the time we get back to Portsmouth we would have done well over 2000 miles.

The site was great and would recommend it without hesitation.

Thanks to all that gave us ideas.

    Phil.
