Hi all,

Can anybody recommend what type insurance or insurance providers I can use to provide temporary insurance for other drivers using our motorhome?

We were thinking of renting out through Camplify.co.uk but after filling in the registration details have found we cannot use there insurance and breakdown cover they offer for a fee as our motorhome is more than 15 years old 2003 Hymer T625 on a fiat Ducato chassis).

Does anyone know of any insurers we can use ad hoc rather than getting full cover for a whole year for other people to drive?

My brother was meant to be borrowing it at the end of the month and looked at a site called dayinsure but they are saying they cannot offer cover for him even though he has no claims or points and is 42. Another strange thing he found when raising the quote was that they could not find the vehicle from the reg number even though it was correct and can be found fine on the DVLA website when checking MOT history etc.

Any pointers or recommendations much appreciated. New to the motorhome world so pretty fresh around the gills!

Cheers

Kevin

I’m not surprised your brother couldn’t get insurance as he is not the registered owner/keeper of the vehicle. The insurance policy will need to be in your name to enable other named drivers to drive the MH.

I'm sure there will be a forum out there somewhere populated by folk who hire out their MHs and I suggest an internet search might reveal all.

Breakdown cover could be similarly complicated and anyone renting your MH won’t be eligible to use your CAMC membership.

To be perfectly honest, I’m wondering if the venture is going to prove more trouble than it’s worth but good luck to you.

    Hi,

As you can see dayinsure specifically provide insurance for people borrowing "other people's" motorhomes so there are sites out there that do it. Thanks for your input anyway, and don't worry they were not planning on masquerading as me on my CAMC membership.

    Cheers

It wouldn’t matter to me if they were 🤷🏻‍♂️😄

I guess you need to search out a similar insurance company.

If your brother is going to be a regular user of the motorhome why not have him added to your policy? I tried to get my son added to mine in order to help me get it to and from the service dealer but they wouldn't accept someone added for a few days and insisted that he be a named driver. I appreciate that wouldn't work, beyond your brother, for other hirers.

You are or propose to be acting as a Self Drive Hire company.

I would suggest you have a word with an already established company who do similar and simply ask them for pointers as to who their insurers are.

Alternatively ask a Registered Insurance Broker to find you a quote. It will be expensive whichever way you do it.

Edit - If you are accepting payment from your relative you will be breaching your own insurance which will almost certainly exclude "Use for Hire and Reward"

Comfort Insurance have an independent policy that would not affect policy holder if there was a claim....
