Flag Flying.
When we started caravaning 20 years ago the sites were full of flags of County, Regiment, sports teams, childrens characters and lights round the awning. I now seem to be the one of a few with a small sailing boat at the top of the pole.
If the wind gets up I take it down so no damage is caused. Seems like a bit of fun has gone.

Personally I am not keen on flag flying. They are ok to mark for example a rally group but otherwise I don’t really see the point. I certainly don’t see them as fun. Lights I find very annoying. Let’s reduce light pollution, not add to it. Flashing lights impinge terribly on other people’s relaxing space.

WW, other folk complain about flags and flashing lights and talk as if they’re prevalent🤷🏻♂️

It would be really nice to think that everyone who goes caravanning on Club sites has a full range of perception and spacial awareness to be able to return to their unit without the need for additional clues, but unfortunately for them this is not always the case.

I am never quite sure what flags on poles are all about on campsites? I could maybe understand if you were on a campsite at Silverstone for the Grand Prix and flying a flag amongst like minded people perhaps supporting a particular team. On a Club site they stick out like a sore thumb! But there seems to be no law against it so those of us who are no keen will have to put up with it

The thing that always bemuses me is that the few that have an enormous flag with 'Bradford Bulls' emblazoned all over it (or any other sports team/county/etc) together with multicoloured, flashing, fit inducing lights all over the awning, are invariably sitting inside their caravan or motorhome watching telly. Its as though they've erected this display for the entertainment and enjoyment of everyone else on site.
I agree with David and Nav. I can see the need if you've pitched in a sea of tents at Glastonbury, but on a numbered pitch on a club site or on a 5 pitch CL?

I'm am definitely in the camp of not liking flags on campsites. Lights I don't mind because once its dark I'm usually inside with the blinds closed.
I have been known to politely ask a flag flying camper if they take it down at night time. One such person asked why and I politely told him so that I can sleep in peace and not have to listen to it cracking and flapping in the wind. The same with wind chimes I like them but not when they are clanking all night long.

I can't understand why, when space is at a premium in a caravan or M/H, and weight is also a factor, anyone would want to carry a large pole inside their van. I was at the Durham site last year and a van nearby had a very high flag pole flying a small triangular flag. It was so high that I thought it belonged to the site and it was only when it was gone 2 days later, along with the caravan, that I realised that it had belonged to the owners of the caravan. I can seen Tammygirl's point if you are parked near to them or near to windhchimes on a windy night.
I dont like any flashing lights at all as they give me migraine.

The poles used are lightweight and collapsible, no weight really and easy to carry. Sometimes, it's fun to see the flags and inflatables flying, we have a flying penguin, sadly, as we're finishing vanning this year the penguin will not be taking flight again....

I'm with you on that Tammy.
Any sort of unnecessary noise at night should be avoided if possible and people with flags should actually think about whether they are an inconvenience to their neighbours.
We once, before caravan came along, stayed at Blakeney Hotel. Right on the front on the harbour. Staff were a bit perplexed when we refused an upgrade to a room at the front overlooking the harbour. All those lanyards clanging away. No thanks. Quite happy with room overlooking the car park.

Stayed there in winter before covid but we had wonderful cold frosty weather so no clanging. Pure luck.
Mind you I had no problem sleeping at Newport site either despite it being adjacent to the main run off from motorway. Have slept through thunderstorms before. But small things like flags fluttering or dogs barking a mile away will wake me up.
Can't figure out my sleeping pattern.

As I mentioned earlier up thread you are amongst like minded people when you rally where the majority probably like that sort of thing so its not out of place and is probably expected. However on a Club site many don't expect it and some may even feel it lowers the tone
As is seems to be allowed I would just like people that do have such things to think about their fellow campers and take them done if its windy and turn all non essential lights off by a reasonable time at night, probably around 10.00pm?David

Just on this subject, I had to answer a complaint recently to a fellow member complaining about a caravan adorned with led lights that apparently was spoiling their holiday (even though they were 200 meters away). The villain concerned is an elderly gent with an illness who likes to sit out just after dark to watch his lights as it gives him happiness. The lights were turned off when he retired for the evening. I struggled with that complaint but managed to sort it amicably. Ok if someone's not happy with their neighbours flags or whatever then politely say so but what happened to live and let live in this intolerant society we seem to live in? Sad.

Hi all my wife loves all the lights around the camp sites especially the darker nights when we are walking into the site now especially with lots of sites turning lights off not keen on flapping flags but the ones we have been near haven’t make a sound maybe it wasn’t windy enough we have lights but they are solar powered and yes it does help you find your way home after a few drinks it’s the price increase that we are more concerned with we booked in June for August just added one extra day yesterday and the price increased I was told by head office today prices can change at any time why I didn’t get a answer to that also electricity has gone down

We stayed at the Club’s Wyatt Covert site, earlier this summer, for the FA Cup Final, as did many others.
Free, cheapo , lightweight flags were given out at Wembley, and most people kept them, and I admit that I tied mine to the ‘van, after the game.
Hope it didn’t disturb anybody….. 😱

Blimey. That kicked off some strong opinions. Just to get the sarcasm out of the way I can find my way back without the flag having sailed offshore in this country and Med.
Will still fly my little sailing dinghy up the pole so look out for me and cheer or boo.
