Renewing caravan insurance with the Club

Who knew?

I recently was about to renew my insurance with the Club (after 30 or so years) when I discovered to my horror that the discount called "Alarm Discount" does not apply to the Alarm System (by PIR) on your caravan but it applies if you have an alarm on your corner steadies.

As said above, "Who knew" How many other members have their insurance with the Club but are unaware of this fact? How many others are deceived by this confusion? Nowhere in any documentation relating to insurance renewal is this fact disclosed.

Be careful if you have your insurance with the Club

And it’s not even insurance but that’s a whole other story.

The club does say quite openly and clearly what discounts are available and for what before you pay your money, while we don't have the corner steady alarm we do have the platinum storage discount and we were asked/told about that during renewing and it's covered again in the schedule/letter. Personally as I've said before I always check any wording to see it fits what I have/want.

If it's not written down anywhere how did (the OP) discover it?

The claims and complaints idea have been discussed many times and one can use the Financial Services Arbiter and it's covered by the FSCS but that's off topic and it's up to an individual to accept that or not.

But having said that Trustpilot gives it 4.7 out of 5 stars. and it has won the Insurance Choice awards 2022. Many positive comments have been written on CT about the cover from claiming to full payments.

But as always let the buyer beware and make their own choice.

Nowhere in my renewal notice mentions anything about a corner steady lock. What is does say is "Alarm Discount". I am of the absolute view that this could quite clearly be taken by anyone to mean the fitted alarm. How can these words be taken to mean "Corner Steady Lock" or "Corner Steady Sensor Alarm"

I discovered it in conversation with the Club's renewal agent (or whatever they are called - who, incidentally, and as always, was helpful and polite)

I stand by my original comments - "Nowhere in any documentation relating to insurance renewal is this fact disclosed"

i feel certain that many others think the same as me.

My van has an alarm with tilt sensors / tracking device - no corner steady alarm. My schedule has a discount for the tracking device, but doesn't mention "alarm". Requires tracker to be active at all times - which it is by default. When alarm set, caravan movement triggers an alarm at monitoring station followed by a call to me, plus notification direct to my phone. When alarm not set, tracker just notifies my phone of movement, not monitoring station.

An alarm that just "makes a noise" is pretty useless anyway - how many cars/houses/caravans have an alarm going off that is ignored by everyone?

Thank you for raising this V70.  I have Club 'insurance' and the discount for an alarm - which I retrofitted and it does have a tilt sensor (which is very sensitive).  The requirement when I took out the policy was that a tilt sensor be part of the alarm system - no mention of corner steady alarms.  I note from Corner's post that the requirement is for tilt sensor and corner steady alarm which in my thinking invalidates my insurance because I am unwittingly not complying with their requirements for the discount - despite the fact it was definitely NOT mentioned to me at the time of taking out the policy.

I shall be on to them first thing in the morning.

Let us know what you find out?

On my schedule/letter, it say the discount on the first page (secure storage discount) and on the third page it lists the conditions for my storage discount, is there nothing on yours?

I have checked the wording of my cover document and as far as I am concerned, it is quite clear and confirms my original understanding.  Highlighting is mine:

"1. The caravan on cover is fitted with an alarm system that detects theft or unlawful removal of the caravan through the use of either a Tilt/Movement
Sensor or a Corner Steady Sensor, and no withdrawal, alteration or variation
of the system, or any structural alteration which might affect the system,
shall be made without the approval of the manufacturer."

Where did that extract in your post come from Corners?  - because I think I know what they are trying to say in that last sentence - but it is very misleading.

I’ve not had caravan insurance / cover with the club for a while as we switched to a MH. However, when we did we claimed the discount and I also understood it was for a tilt sensor and /  or corner steady alarm. Ours was just PIR and tilt sensor, no corner steady alarms. We were switched onto the cover from insurance just before we got rid of the van. Is there perhaps a difference between new policies and historical ones?

Here’s a bit more information on corner’s post. It does say “promotional information only” etc.

I don’t understand all the confusion.  Only two documents form the Contract of cover; the general Terms and Conditions and the Schedule.  Any term or condition contained in the Schedule takes precedence over the general T’s&C’s.

For example V70, if your Schedule says you must have a tilt sensor and a steady sensor then that is what you must have.  If it says you must have a tilt sensor or a steady sensor then you must have one or the other.  The schedule for each customer is unique.  All very simple.

Yes, under endorsements. It’s based on the information I provided when I took out the cover, or updated, i.e. this year I updated storage as it has been upgraded to Cassoa Platinum from Gold.
