Route from Newark to Maragowan site in Killin

We are looking at travelling from Newark ( i.e. A1) up to the Club site in Killin, near Loch Tay in mid May for a few days. It is too far to travel in a day so we are looking for a good stopover, preferably one with a walk or two in the area which isn't miles off the route. Any suggestions gratefully appreciated. 

Also if you have stayed at a CL in this part of Scotland and would like to recommend it then that would be interesting to look at too.

    A stop around north Berwick might suit or Edinburgh area. That would give you an easy run up to Killin the next day for the 1pm arrival time. 

     EDIT, just thought there is a nice CL Slatebarns, it's next to Roslyn chapel that could suit. Nice walk and a nice pub/hotel where you can get a meal if you so wish

    A quick look at Via Michelin says it’s an hour quicker to cut across on the A66 from Scotch Corner to Penrith - which is your halfway point.  Personally I would book for two nights at Thacka Lea Caravan Park there and have a day out beside Ullswater before going on.

    Hi

    Id consider coming across the A66 and joining the M6 then M74 much better roads in my opinion than the A1. If you were to do that you could stop at a great little CL we use Low Moor Head in Longtown only 10’mins form motorway or a bit further Jp Moffat C&CC site is nice and right in the town so plenty to within walking distance from the site again just off the motorway. Maragowan is a lovely site you will enjoy it I’m sure

    There a couple of good CLs just to the West of Penrith, Slapestones Villa at Stainton and  Moss Thorn farm at Pallet Hill. The Grange Court at Cliburn is another to consider.

    If you want to carry on up the A1 then East Fortune Farm, close to North Berwick is another good option.

    Hopefully you're sorted for your stopover. We stayed at the club's site at Strathclyde Country Park for a night on our way to Maragowan and had an easy run the next day. Strathclyde Country Park is just off the motorway junction so easy to exit and get back on in the morning to continue your journey.

    As far as the last part of the route to Killin is concerned, I recommend that you avoid the A82 because the road, in parts, alongside Loch Lomond is quite narrow with vertical rock faces and is used by lorries and coaches so quite tricky to negotiate safely. I recommend you take the M9 up to Stirling and then the A84 up past Callander as it will be a much less stressful drive!

    Thank you so much for this tip about the driving route. We definitely don’t need the added stress of vertical rock faces! 

    All the replies given have been so helpful. I will make a point of asking again next time we are planning a trip.
