Mayday Arrival Options

I was a member of Mayday for several years and used their services just once.  It was an utter disaster.  I had broken my shoulder and asked for a "driver" to take us home, as in the Mayday Terms and Conditions.  I was told I couldn't have a driver and I would be taken home by a relay of two tow trucks. The first truck took us to a car park at Lakeside to await our second tow truck which would take us home. We had a wait of over five hours for the second truck. to arrive, it was old, dirty and the plug in socket for the caravan rear lights had only the nearside lights working.  The driver was rude and complained he should have been going home instead of picking us up. We then discovered some weeks later that when we had arrived home the tow truck driver had smashed the caravan hitch as he did not know how it worked.

We also belong to he CCC who use RAC Arrival.  I am considering using Arrival instead of Mayday but, before I do does any other company offer  breakdown cover with similar benefits to Arrival or Mayday?

I've used Mayday a few times over the years with various vehicles & never had a problem. May Day use local recovery firms so it's down to the individual company whether they are good or bad.

Similarly, although the RAC use their own crews to attend breakdowns, they also use local commercial firms for recovery so it’s pot luck who recovers your unit.

We had a large-ish MH carried home to Cornwall from Scotland via Arrival and the first recovery company was excellent and took it as far as Preston. The second carrier who continued the journey used too small a truck and scraped the tail end of the MH chassis loading and unloading it.

For anything more than a short journey I would always hand over the vehicle to the recovery man and go home by train rather than ride in the breakdown truck,

We use the AA as it's the breakdown service appointed by Nationwide and as account holder I get this service along with other (paid for) benefits. Cover seems wide enough for my needs but fortunately only had to use them for a breakdown in wife's car.

I'm not entirely sure which "similar benefits" you are looking for? Could be anything from length of vehicle or to do with pets or any car cover etc. Did you have some core benefits in mind?

Maybe not so easy at the moment.

Me too. On the occasion I described, the recoverer carried the MH and towed the empty trailer while we drove the Ka from Ardgartan to Cornwall. It’s not an experience I’d want to repeat.

However, I can’t help the OP by suggesting any other breakdown/recovery insurer.

We have been members since 2009 and have had to use them 3 times. On all occasions we had courteous professional service carried out by the local recovery company but orchestrated by Mayday / Greenflag.

    1) We ran over a piece of plywood that fell off a van somewhere up the road in front and it hit the diesel filter, shearing it from the underside of the car while towing to the Lake District. We were recovered from the A50 to the recovery base in Derby where the garage managed to get a new housing and filter and got us back on the road after about 6 hours of looking round Derby town centre.

    2) We had a stuck rear drum parking break while visiting Ogmore castle in Wales from a CL in Cardiff. Recovered to Bridge End and the garage fixed the issue in about an hour.

    3) Had a blown turbo hose on the A5 while towing from Anglesea to Shapp. The recovery truck picked us up, put the XC90 on the back and towed the van all the way to the CL in the lakes. While on route we were able to call the local Volvo dealer and got an appointment to fix the car that evening.

In my experience to date, Mayday / Greenflag have been competitively priced and given good service. I think it's just down to who you get on the day.

We have similar WN. Had occasion to be rescued twice in MH. One time was a short few miles to a garage, second was for MH to be relayed back from Norfolk. We were more than looked after to be honest, the only issue we had was because we had dogs, and wouldn’t travel them home in MH on low loader. A family member collected dogs and me while OH went with MH. We still use Bank Account for rescue and recovery. No idea of overseas aspect as never needed it.
