Taking a dog abroad post brexit
I wondered what other people's experience has been taking their dog to Europe, particularly regarding getting the tape worm treatment prior to returning to the UK. We have taken our previous dogs abroad before with pet passports, which was easy. It is far more difficult and expensive now. For those who don't know the pet passport has been replaced by the Animal Health Certificate which cost us £175 which, by all accounts was quite reasonable. We also had the cost of the rabies jab, £56, which I appreciate would have been necessary pre brexit. Travel cost on Eurotunnel - £44. Now for the tapeworm treatment. Why is this necessary anyway? The french vet looked in our dogs ears, looked at his teeth and listened to his heart. I don't imagine any of this was necessary but was done to justify the 47 Euros charge for administering a worming tablet and signing a piece of paper to confirm it had been done. Have any other people had a better experience? Is there any way we can lobby for a better system than the Animal Health Certificate? Surely they can come up with something cheaper than this - which lasts for 4 months but as you have to travel abroad within 10 days of it having been issued doesn't give you any scope for using it twice.

Yup!!! AHC is just something we have to learn to live with although there is a post on here with instructions on how to get a EU passport for your dog at a fraction of the cost of the AHC.
The bit that i find annoying is possibly having to book 1 or 2 nights at a site close to the ferry port so that you can get an appointment with a vet to stick a worming tablet down the dogs throat and say some kind things as to how fit your dog is. Some vets close to the ports have walk in surgeries some don't, so an appointment is necessary.
p.s. not all vetinary practices in the UK have vets qualified to complete the AHC, Pets at Home in our area do not despite having 2 surgeries within a few miles of each other

5DO - you list many of the costs that were present before BREXIT, travel costs, worming and health check (required but not always done).
The answer to your question is to find a sympathetic vet (there are perhaps more in Spain and Portugal than France) who will issue a pet passport registered to a friends property. They don’t check property ownership - it’s just a tick box exercise.
Yes you have to have another rabies injection and can’t let a British vet anywhere near the pet passport. But it cost us 110€ for the jab and Max can travel 28 times before the passport is full!
Rufs - why go to the channel port - if you have 5 days to travel? We use vets en route - often booked by the campsite who are pleased to help.
We don’t begrudge the 50€ for the tapeworm tablet as the health check has unearthed problems with our last 2 dogs missed on their visit to our home vet for their annual boosters.0 -

yes i know, but it is an age thing for me, like to know that we have made it to the port in good time to catch the ferry, use dog as an excuse, but have stayed at some really good sites a couple of hours from the port and done some good site seeing especially around the Brittany coast & Santander, will probably do as you suggest when we return from Spain in January 2023 as the weather could be a problem so no point in hanging about.

another anomoli if you are using the AHC is that the form has to be in the language of the country you are landing in, which normallty should not be a problem, however, as a result of the fuel crisis in France we have changed our sailing to arrive in Spain, we leave on Friday so now have to get vet to issue new AHC in Spanish, hopefully FOC.
