I was Strongly reminded by my ex- Life Guard nephew that today marks the Fortieth Anniversary of these atrocities.
We must Never Forget.

I remember it as well. Truly dreadful scenes. Very sadly there was an aftermath of tragedy after the events as well. PTSD, survivor never got over what had happened to him. He killed his children, then himself. I don’t think anyone was ever brought to justice, as the prosecution was badly handled.
Sefton survived though, miraculously.
During the 1970s-80’s, we grew up with two ever present fears in Yorkshire. One was The Ripper, too close for any kind of comfort. And the other was the IRA. I lost a school chum in the Ballykelly pub bombing.

Seems like a lifetime ago, ttda. (Well, I suppose it was!). I was an Inspector in Hull in charge of the Vice Squad - and we were very much involved in that investigation even though we were miles away from where it was all happening. As you say, it really was an ever-present fear throughout Yorkshire.

Indeed. We never went out on our own as teenagers, parents made us ring home, put in place strict curfews. They finally caught him just six miles from my childhood home address. 😱 Although it could have been anywhere in Yorkshire to be fair, he had the perfect job to do what he did.

I think this atrocity was just about the most horrendous and saddest sight I've ever seen and remains so to this day. My nephew was also in the Life Guards but not at that time.
