4pm Reykjavik time - it's 9°C and pouring down with rain! surprised

But it's also our 48th wedding anniversary and when we arrived at the hotel yesterday there was a lovely welcoming card and a plate of fruit & chocolate in our room and last night at dinner the waitress brought us over 2 glasses of champagne and wished us well. smile

We set out early to walk around the city this morning and had the best of the weather for it. There is a nice stroll along the sea front from our hotel, past this steel sculpture representing a Viking ship, the Sea Voyager. A little further on there is this amazing new concert hall, Harpa, opened in 2011. All glass and steel, the design has won many awards - spectacular inside and out! And just along the path from the hall, Icelanders seem to have made a speciality of designing these little piles of stones, hundreds of them!

We ended up back at the Hofoi House, and these are the actual steps where Reagan & Gorbachev stood for their historic handshake in 1986. 🤝

The temperatures remind me of Shetland in June! wink

Well done for reaching number 48, sounds like you had a good celebration!

But this is what most visitors to the city come to see - the modern cathedral called Hallgrimmskirkja. Only completed in 1986 it's a real "marmite" building, you either love it or think it's a monstrosity. It caused quite a controversy at the time but is now accepted as one of the city's main attractions. You can go up to the top of the tower for far reaching views of the city but there are reminders that if you're there when the bells ring, every 15 minutes, you might want to cover your ears! They are very loud.wink

The organ has over 150 pipes and is the largest musical instrument in the country.

Sounds and looks like a wonderful holiday, thank you for sharing.

Congratulations on your wedding anniversary 🍾🥂

I did try to post a few days ago, after I'd changed my details and needed approval before my posts appeared. It has appeared, last post page 2, but unless you read the whole thread it'll be missed - probably not an issue as doesn't contain anything interesting 😂. But it was nice to read of KjellNN 's childhood home.

    Safe travels home

Safely home again now, after a 4am wake up call! surprised Keflavik airport was utter chaos with about 20 flights leaving within minutes of each other and the baggage carousel had broken down. How we laughed!

Anyway, all arrived safely  (Mrs M did say "well if the suitcases get lost it'll save on the washing & ironing! wink).

It's been a wonderful holiday and I can thoroughly recommend going if you ever get the chance.

Thanks to everyone who's posted - hope the photo's may have inspired some of you - mickysf, you should put Iceland to the very top of your bucket list! smile
