WV T6 pop up or not
WE bought T6 5 years ago with double sliders, in addition to towing our caravan (car is suitable as well) to enable us to take motorcycle with us here and abroad. We haven't fully converted the inside although there is an inverter, leisure battery lights and carpeted ceiling and walls. Husband very talented and has made pull down bed from side and pod for cooking all removable and a electric winch brace that helps the bike go up ramp. We have manage to sleep in van when we know we are going some distance away from our site all manageable but there is an element of bending at a certain position which is an issue for us both me more so as I have degenerative lower back.
We call it our Swiss army knife as we use it as day van, touring, towing, taking electric bike, wood shopping trolley etc. Dilemma is to go for pop up roof or not. No plan fro making extra bed up top but create another removable unit for sleeping and storage. We've seen van last week that pop up was not locked and they were driving with one end half up ?? others who seem to have problems folding it down, some love them others wouldn't do it again. It is such a big thing to do and high roofs don't sit with us.
Views on types or problems encountered, there are so many companies out there as well now.

Check out ‘poptop bungee’ on YouTube. If you get a poptop fitted it will come with locking straps that are used for-locking whilst moving & pulling down poptop after use too. Storage in poptop is a canny idea to give more space during use👍🏻

Our very first micro camper had a pop up roof. As Rocky says, brilliant for alleviating bending, and we used ours for storage on site. Never had it come up whilst driving, and this was 1970’s technology. Very easy to use.

Although not exactly the same thing, we have had pop up roof Eriba caravans since 2003. We have never had an issue with the roof up when it should not be. I have heard of it happening, but with the exception of 2 or 3 incidents it has been down to the owner.
If looking for headroom and given the choice of a high roof or pop-top/hinged canvas roof then my money would be with a high quality installation of the later every time.
The lower roof looks better, it feels like your camping and you must find it would be better on the pocket due to lower fuel costs.

Coming from a different angle :~~
As an 80-year old ( now !!) I could not for life of me use a VW Camper again, simply because getting in thro the sliding door means I have to take greatest care.
If I don't I will get a right whack across my back at about shoulder blade height since the doors & obviously the opening, are a fair bit shorter than that of the Ducato which I now have ! If you can cope with that little {!!} problem then a Pop-top should give you no other problems but more camping capability. Indeed in years gone by I had differing styles of elevating roof and they all had very efficient clips, clamps etc for ensuring safety on the road !! Only once did I find my elevating roof was up and that was on my first holiday in the bay-window VW when I'd forgotten to shut down

Thanks for all your replies will look into the links. Extra height and a bit of storage when in use is the bonus of pop up I can see, when away we have seen height barriers with the wind out awning we just make some of them but definitely wouldn't with high top. I like the interior in the skyline it does look a nice finish.
