Caravan LED Road Lights

I tow my Compass Kensington with a Ford Kuga Mk2. To enable the towing electrics (Reverse and Fog lights) to work correctly I have removed the nearside bulbs due to Kuga not able to handle 2 x reverse and 2 x foglights on the caravan.

Question is can anyone recommend a set of LED's that will work correctly. I have looked on various sites and there seems to be a mine field out there of what will work and what will not. I know they have to be CANBUS error free but I've seen various complaints of LED's which are supposed to be canbus but still fail to work.

Any suggestions (web links etc) out there especially from Mk2 Kuga owners or anyone who has resolved this problem.

I realise I'm road legal with my current setup but would like to have a full selt of LED's fitted.

KugaOwnersClub.co.uk has some posts on the subject already and will probably have knowledgeable people who can take you further.

I wouldn't take it personally  ... obviously no one else here has had the same problem.

I'd  just take a guess & order some off eBay  ... they're not too expensive & won't break the bank if they then have to sit in a Man Drawer for the next 15 years. 😉

    Hi.

I am currently experiencing the same problem with a recently acquired S-Max. The Ford dealer arranged for tow bar fitting which left me with caravan reversing lights and fog lights not working - until I removed both nearside lights.

Not really wanting holes where even legally unnecessary bulbs should be, I spent a long time trawling through the Amazon minefield of LED replacement “bulbs” yesterday. Today I’m expecting delivery of 4 LED lights to use as reversing and fog lights but, ahead of their arrival later today, I started wondering about their legality. That also seems to be debatable!

My not entirely successful Internet search led me to this Caravan and Motorhome Club exchange which, although it didn’t give me an answer, confirmed that the, admittedly plausible, explanation from the tow bar fitter probably was right, and it wasn’t the Ford dealer specifying a less-than-ideal installation to minimise their costs!

I see this “discussion” (a bit one-sided as discussions go) started two years ago so I wonder if there are some definitive answers by now?

Not sure what your van is but it sounds like you need an LED Control unit fitting to the caravan similar to THIS, other makes available for different vans.

On the subject of removing bulbs I would say that it is illegal and would certainly be classed as a modification by your insurance co. As far as I know if a vehicle is fitted with any lights as standard they have to be in working order.

Whilst you have not stated the wattage for the reversing or fog lights, I suspect these could be 21W.

    Try swapping the 2 * 21W for 2 * 10W filament lights. I have found this works.

Had less success with LED replacements, as they tend to fail or flicker
