I've still got mine tucked away in a drawer. Too good to throw away but worth hardly anything. The sliding action was, and still is,beautiful.

I've still got my Logarithmic table book, but getting back on topic:

The real question for members is how much they would expect prices of individual campsites to come down as a result of paying for electricity separately? Many of us know on a daily basis how much our energy costs are. I have mentioned before that my personal energy costs at home average between £2 and £5 a day on the latest tariff but likely to go up again come September. So is a reduction of between £2 and £5 a day, depending on season a reasonable expectation? I don't see any advantage in reducing the ampage if we move to meters as all that would do is force people to use more gas which itself is becoming more expensive a difficult to acquire

i would expect to see a minimum reduction in pitch prices of £3.50. This is based on what the CL owners quote as a average consumption (10Kwh per day) for a site open all year.. From converstaions on here, we all know individuals can use much more on a daily basis especially in winter, as much as 40Kwh have been quoted. My self, with just running my fridge on electric and keeping the batteries fully charged and running our electric kettle, I can get away with 4Kwh per day.

I don't disagree with your suggested figure but surely the reduction would have to reflect the time of year? So perhaps a smaller reduction in the summer months but more in the winter. It might even give the Club an opportunity for bigger discounts in the winter months as the uncertainty of how much electricity would be used is removed?

As this thread is about metered electricity and its possible introduction by the Club there would be the opportunity to not use if you so wished which would serve the same ends? My point about discounts was that during the winter months currently site fees need to be higher to reflect the possible (excessive) use of electricity. If the payment and use of electricity was removed from the site fee that might allow the downward readjustment of some site fees tailored to individual sites depending on occupancy. It might not happen of course, but it would available to the Club if it would improve occupancy?

Does it really matter? My forward bookings have gone up by just over £1 per night. Thats nothing compared to the increased cost of fuel to get there (unless you are Chocolate Treessmile).

I’ve got a slide rule but never used it, but logs and anti logs that takes me back. Was there a table for sines and cosines?

Yes they were all in one book, all inverse trig and log(sines)... as well I recall.

Being a nerd (well the name didn't exist back then) I bought seven figure tables! Not sure why I thought the extra accuracy was needed really at 14?

I remember that when clearing out a cupboard we found hundreds of them covered in dust and cobwebs and before throwing them out I taught a class how to multiply numbers with them, they found it 'fun' but thought it was something out of the dark ages and wouldn't believe people actually used them.

The laws of logs that made them 'work' are still taught though.

Though I was able to do logs & anti-logs I never saw the point of them - still don't - when you could as easily do a long multiplication. There's an engineering book of tables ZEUS, they originally had log tables in them but they dropped them years ago.

There is of course the old story that at Creation all the creatures were told to go forth and multiply to which a few snakes answered "we can't, we're adders". The response was "Go and find some logs"

We on a site at the moment and asked the wardens if they could tell us as to whether the price was known for the increase in charges on that site ; 50p a night or 2.50 a night. The answer is they couldn’t and it does not appear on any breakdown except I know we have paid more for the week that was stated some months ago. I may have missed something, but what is the methodology surrounding the different price bands? And where is the transparency on what each site charges?

I should have made myself clear! I am referring to the additional costs of electricity due to the general rise in rates.

I have also asked that question of site staff and they seem unaware of what the increases are for their sites

The transparency is £x for the pitch and £y per person as shown on the website. The answer to the rest of your question is for the club to decide and they only tell us the end result. We don’t need to know how they arrive at their figures but only the totals🤷🏻‍♂️

Would it not be fairly easy to give people the option of a reduced rate if no EHU chosen.  Could a fuse be removed from the electric box or something?

I suspect even if it was an option the reduced rate would be so small most would think it is not worth it and will continue to use electric to the maximum they can as the cost is inclusive in an already expensive pitch

On cc EHUs a lot are now of the type where the mcb is in an unlocked access box that needs to be reset when you plug your lead in, and several may be in the box concerned not just the pitch you are on

As the older locked bollards are replaced the new unlocked bollards are the replacement, which also save a lot of member related overload callouts for site staff

Why would it be “so small”? Take electricity out of the equation and a significant price reduction could be achieved. No EHU would get my vote on any site.

The difference in pitch price with or without EHU for a C&CC pitch is £5p.n.

Out of interest and regarding increasing electricity costs and usage. We have a caravan site in our area and know the owners, who also sell calor on site too. They have not been able to obtain any calor recently and they've told us that site users are relying more on electricity which is putting a big pressure on site costs.

I'm guessing that the problems with gas supplies are now becoming universal and this example will be happening elsewhere too and CAMC will be facing similar usage and increased energy costs.

Calor say they have been concentrating on bulk supplies and large cylinder users ,but are expecting to start being able to supply more of the smaller cylinders in time for when most users of them increasessealed

It would appear then that there is definitely a gas shortage and this will increase the use of electricty on sites. There are no signs of local supplies being met.

Thats if they have enough staff to run the sites, both  Alderstead Heath And Bognor sites have site support to cover for staff off with Covid and site support is also in at Seacroft and FM,because of staff shortages

    Evening

I spoke to calor this week to once again try and achieve some stock. A helpful chap said the stocks of bottles is slowly increasing and they've managed to take on and train more drivers. The problem is though, not a shortage of gas but a shortage of trained staff to fill the empties.

But it appears to also be effecting garage supplies as well Jk? None within a 20mile radius around here at all. Hopefully if they have taken on more drivers this won't last much longer?

Yes, but I was just pointing out that sites are going to see an extra pull on electricty due to gas shortages and prices will no doubt increase more than expected. Normally we use gas alongside electricity but we've now bought an electric kettle and toaster. I know that many will be using these anyway but some of us will be increasing our electricty use to conserve our gas for emergencies and (for us) a rally and non ehu site coming up this year.

There is a thread somewhere about gas supplies?! But if the use of electricity increases due to the unforseen lack of gas will CAMC act to reduce excessive use as per the OP?

It must be remembered the tariffs for a business are not capped like the tariff for a consumer.  A business could be paying .£0.70 or more per kwh and that cost has to be passed onto the end consumer if the business is to make any profit. Perhaps the first 10kwh or £7 per day could be included in the site fee and if you exceed that amount, you pay extra.  Installing meters on each pitch could work out to be very expensive and then you have the issue of monitoring the meter when the customer is leaving the site.

We use a commercial site where we pay in advance for electric consumption at £3.50 per day.  Stay 10 days and you pay £35.  If you use less, they refund the difference back to your card straight away.  If you use more, you can buy extra from the reception.

Meters can be read remotely so when you checked out, the reading is automatically registered in the reception and any balance refunded straight away.  i think they use ANPR on their barrier when leaving so it picks up the car reg.  I am sure that the CAMC could implement something similar?
