Carrying 2 bikes on tow car plus caravan

Hello!

It is possible to mount a 2 bike carrier onto the tailgate of our VW T6. However, is it possible to then tow our Bailey 460 at the same time? Has anyone done this and is there enough clearance when cornering for example?

Many thanks in anticipation.

Lynne

I had a Witter bike rack which fixed into an additional plate put on the side of the towbar and once carried 2 bikes this way. I did find it a real pain when cornering though and only ever did it that way once. For the rest of the holiday I removed the jockey wheel to give it better cornering.

So the answer is Yes we did find it interfered with cornering, plus the inconvenience of remembering to fit the jockey again before unhitching, or at least put the steadies down at the front.

As Wherenext eludes, until you try it, you will not know!

I have a 4 biker MaxxRaxx  with the extension piece, it also mounts on a plate beside the tow ball, we have had it for years (before the prices got ridicules).

I've used it on my D3, D4 and now D5 with a Bailey 646 - I can fit 2 adult and one large kids bikes on it when towing (the wife's bike goes inside the van). I do have to take the handle off the jockey for clearance (but that is a security feature of my jockey and take only seconds). I can then use it for all 4 bikes once at site.

If I go pretty much full lock, the bike wheels do touch the van grab handles, but as the bikes are hung from the cross bars on the maxxraxx, they 'swing' sufficiently that it has never been an issue / never cause any damage - that would not happen with just 2 bikes though.
