Flu jabs

My husband had his flu jab booked for next Tuesday at our local Boots store. He received a phone call yesterday saying it was cancelled because they don't have enough vaccine. He was given another appointment in three weeks time. I checked on the Boots website to discover there were still lots of appointments available for under sixty fives during the next couple of weeks. This morning on their website it states that no appointments are available for over sixty fives but that existing appointments will still go ahead. Does anyone know if a different vaccine is used for different age groups?

    Yes, the over 65's vaccine is different.

    An adjuvant is added to increase the immune response which is weaker as we get older.

    Try another pharmacy, they might have stocks. Our surgery had delays which suddenly improved and we had our jabs earlier than many.

    We both have appointments for flu jabs at our local surgery for Tuesday and presume they will go ahead, slightly earlier than last year. 

    Of more concern to us is the Covid booster jab - we both received texts last week inviting us to book appointments. As we were out walking at the time we left it till later in the afternoon to follow the link and discovered no appointments available all the way through to the end of the year! As I found that rather surprising I emailed the surgery to check and they confirmed that,  yes, all available appointments had been taken already! The alternative is to book through NHS on line but, having tried, you can only do that once the 6 months are up from your second main jab.

    We had our done last week, we also received an 'invite' from Boots which we booked for two weeks ahead this coming Saturday.

    Then a week last Friday got a txt from our surgery to arrange an appointment, we thought we would see and got one for the following Tuesday - just 4 days wait. Interestingly it was in the parish hall and appeared to be a collaboration from a number of GP surgeries in the area. 

    No reaction at all from me but Mrs C had a sore arm and red area near the injection for about a day.

    We had our flu jabs at our GP surgery on Saturday morning and we are booked in for our Covid boosters next Saturday,at a local Vaccination Centre.Notifications for both sets of jabs were on time and by text message.

    All very smoothly done and quite reassuring,given that we have both had "health issues" which made the whole Pandemic Period a rather tense time.Life goes on....

    My Mum, 93, has had her Covid booster, with no reactions whatsoever. We are all booked in for our flu jabs, but Mum’s is on a different date, different vaccine. Not had our invites for Covid boosters yet, but we are a bit younger than a lot on here.

    Saw the awful news about that poor young teenager who died yesterday. Only 15, no underlying health issues. She caught Covid, cancelled her planned vaccination date as she was self isolating. She passed away on the day she should have been injected. So very very sad. 

    I am just coming out the other side of a cold. Haven’t had one for ages. Not to bad but felt so tired and lethargic. Hope that’s it for this coming Winter🤞

    Booked my Flu Jab at nearest ( WELL ) pharmacy when I collected my monthly supply of official meds on Friday.  The Dispenser went straight on line and got me a confirmed booking for three weeks time.  

    TtDA --  I'm feeling much better too, self-isolating-snifflers Unite !!

    Couldn't get one at our local surgery for last week when I phoned them up 2 weeks ago so I popped into Boots in Devizes whilst there on holiday. 20 minutes later walked out with having had it. When I spoke to our surgery they, too, stated they only had vaccines for the under 65s so OH had hers done yesterday and MiL had hers done the week before by a different surgery to ours, who somehow managed to get over 65 vaccine.

    I did read that there are shortages of over 65 vaccine nationwide so it is hit and miss.

    That's Booster Covid jabs not flu.

    😁 I am more like my old self as well Brian👍 Our new next door neighbour is a nurse, she has just said if your cold has been a bad one, that’s your immune system sorting things out and a good sign👍 Glad you are getting better.😁

    We have had numerous texts and even a phone call from our home surgery reminding us to get our flu jabs, and the latest said that they were having a walk-in session on Friday and no need to book. We are away and have booked to have them done straight after our booster jabs, at a local clinic, this coming Thursday.

        Brian has not had a sneeze or a sniffle since my earlier post laughing but still going to be vairry careful over next couple of days ~~ cannot afford anything approaching a relapse 'cos my local shop is much dearer than that pair of Yankee supermarkets** we have in Crewe !!

    And on that thought I shall retire to bed with my wallet & cards tucked safely in my pillow-case  money-mouth

    I had my flu jab last Monday at.... Sainsbury's!!!  😀😀.  I had an email or letter from Lloyd's inviting me to book.  The Lloyd's in Sainsbury's was the earliest appointment I could get. 

    Our local GP's were brilliant in rolling out the Covid jabs, but they always seem to lag behind with the flu jabs, so I went with Lloyd's at Sainsbury's this time.

     Thanks for the replies. Just hoping they do have the vaccine available in three weeks. I'm also hoping I have an easier time when it comes to getting my booster. It took me ages to find a centre near enough to attend. Devon, Yorkshire and Shropshire were the ones offered to me for the first vaccination, not ideal when I live in Northumberland.

    Getting a bit annoyed now, all over the news that we should get a flu jab. Phoned Drs, reply, ‘ nothing organised yet, we are still thinking about it’. Tried Boots chemist, told, ‘ we can’t get it at present, not making any appointments until later in the month and then no appointments available until November. Seems no use trying other Boots as he said they are all the same locally. Why all over the news when not available.

    Last year we received a text towards the end of September, from our Health centre, asking us to phone and make a booking. Having not received anything this year I was about to phone to chase it up, when in comes a text. No vaccine available until 11th October, don’t ring us we will contact you by text when it’s your turn.

    Ours were done on Sept 11th, seems like a big gap in various parts of the country. We could have had them even earlier as our pharmacy was offering walk in sessions but we had already booked at the surgery.

    We're in a similar situation, Debsc. I’m not confident of the doc delivering the flu jab soon as they’re doing flu and covid booster together and the covid vax didn’t turn up so I’ve no idea if the program is on schedule. Also, I’m not over the moon at the idea of having the two jabs together.

    I could get appointments at Boots in Nov but I rang a local independent pharmacy and we can have the over 65 flu jabs on Monday👍🏻. They’re only just across the road from Boots as well🤷🏻‍♂️.

    We are fortunate that we have had our Flu jabs at our surgery. We only got that appointment because Margaret was dropping something off at the surgery and asked about the Flu jabs. We are yet to hear about our COVID boosters but they won't be done at the surgery but at a local vaccine centre. 

    One thing I think that COVID has exposed is the abysmal level of communication direct to Patients from the NHS. It's almost as if they rely on the media to inform us rather than doing it personally. Most surgeries will have a mobile number and many might have our email addresses but they don't seem to use them as a means of general communication. OK they remind you when you have an appointment but they don't for general information which means people are not getting information direct, only secondhand!

    Although we've had our flu jabs we had two letters explaining that the jabs would be delayed, when I phoned to re-book I was told the jabs could go ahead! Just don't understand what is going on. Such a waste of NHS resources sending out letters, we've never had letters, previously information was put out locally on line and in our parish newsletters etc.

    We have had our flu jabs, all very efficiently organised, but the programme for Covid boosters has been what I believe is technically known as an utter cock-up! Texts were sent to everyone, regardless of age or eligibility, at the same time and consequently just about everyone I've spoken to has been unable to get a booking! frown

    We asked at the surgery on Tuesday because quite a few of our friends have made appointments by ringing/nagging. They said that although all available appointments are booked through to the end of the year, they've no idea if folk who have made bookings will be outside the 6 month deadline.

    Tend to agree about comms. It’s inconsistent, my booster invitation came via text with link to make online booking - worked perfectly. Flu invite came via letter offering option to book online if I have a SystmOne online account (which I do). However, absolutely no option to make online appointment when I looked. The other option was one of 4 mobile numbers which I tried several times, sometimes no answer, sometimes answerphone, sometimes “sorry cannot connect”. Perseverance got me through eventually so all jabs booked.

    We had been booked in for flu jabs that were later cancelled due to delay in deliveries. Lined up for Covid booster this Sunday. AS the year progresses, I'm beginning to resemble a dartboard.

    I may have misunderstood the gist of this bit of your post M but having it bang on 6 months isn't a deadline just a minimum time lapse recommendation, i.e. no earlier than 6 months. Obviously talking about the Covid Booster jab.

    They are concerned that some will have been given appointments earlier than the 6 month interval, W. They said that since everyone had been sent the same text at the same time there was no check on when folk had received their second main jab. Not clear if the booster will be given if folk turn up for their appointment before that 6 months has elapsed. It seems a real mess! frown

    Hopefully it will all improve.  We had our flu jabs 23rd September a couple of days after receiving a texted invitation to call and arrange an appointment at our local hub.  For us the system worked flawlessly.
