Bees Behaving Strangely

For the last few days I have noticed dozens, if not hundreds, of what I think are wild bees (not bumble bees), flying over a patch of our garden. It is an area of about 6 feet x 3 feet which has approximately 30% bare soil. The bees are flying about an inch or two above the ground. Some settle on the soil for 1 or 2 seconds and then fly off again but keeping within the approximate area.  They don't appear to have a nest within the various plants, heuchera and fuchsias.  About 10 feet away there is another smaller area with bees doing the same but different plants. They exhibit this behaviour all through the day.

Anybody know what might be going on?

No idea but I wonder if they are solitary mining bees setting about excavating brood chambers for their eggs?

We recently came across a small but not insignificant number of Solitary Bees on a walk. They seem to hover or flit around an area without purpose but we did see a couple disappear into separate holes in the earth.

Might have been a good breeding year for them.

I have a permanent area in a corner of my garden(South facing) where I have prunings of all thicknesses stacked between a tree & a drystone wall it has straw & hay scattered over it. For around a week now all manner of Bumblebees mainly have been inspecting it with the intention of overwintering. I never touch the area 52weeks a year. It’s their winter quarters this has gone on for 20yrs. I love the sight & sound of Bumblebees in my garden.
