Just read on FB that Bristol CC have given the club a 3 month extension. This was announced on the club site web page on the 9th. Don't try and book for New Year though, it's full

It’s only booked for new year if you want one of the few awning pitches. Non awning are still available. We stopped there 9 / 10th strange they didn’t mention it. Although I doubt we will get around to going again and unfortunately that will be our last visit.☹️ As it’s staying open till January perhaps they will get some of the out of action facilities fixed, which judging from the reviews have been like that since the end of August.

My thoughts too Steve, about the facilities, people will be making their final last visits all over again but not good value in these circumstances. We've made our final visit awhile back. Sad to see it's demise in this way.

Stayed there last week. Obviously suffering from some under investment but facilities are far from poor. I’d happily stay again at under £30 per night.

There are likely a lot of weekends booked on some sites. It depends on area of country and how many nights

Some things about that trip sit in my mind. We stopped off at the site on the way home. As we travelled back I realised I had a problem with car water pump. I had my wife watching the temperature gauge for the last hour home. We got home and as I relaxed driving on the last 50 metres I passed a wagon, caught his door mirror and shattered it. I stopped and walked back to apologised and make recompense. He laughed and said to forget it as he had a spare glass and more still at home. I gave him  large bottle of Whitbread Pale Ale. When I had reversed caravan into place and parked car I opened the bonnet. I tool hold of a fan blade and pulled back on it it was like pulling beer at a pump. Every time I pulled back water streamed out.

In Derbyshire alone, Buxton, Carsington, Poolsbrook and the Firs all have good availability, although not so much at weekends. Not much further away, Clumber park, which was going to have closed for refurbishment is open for another month and is available to book for any date in October.

I agree the facilities are OK. It would just be nice if all of them were available for those who want to use them. Whilst I accept they are not going to want to spend megabucks, a bit of plumbing work isn’t going to break the bank. The cost currently is over £30 a night for two, it’s just that the government are subsidising us and it certainly will be over October half term / Christmas peaks,  when that subsidy is much reduced.

I like BW, OH does not.

I treat it as an aire that has a (underinvested) shower block...which makes £30 a night blooming expensive...offset somewhat by the location. Having said that, many continental aires are in the heart of popular cities and can be free to use... but are not run by a commercial organisation.

OH thinks it's a dump...a car park pretending to be a CC site and charging the usual rates for using it...

so, we both think it's convenient for Bristol but, being a club 'site', it's never going to be a cheap visit.

the jury's out as to whether we will return before the closure.

I don't know whether anyone has read the present site details but there is local construction going on from 7am to 7pm, every day! Take your ear plugs. This would ruin it for me, totally. frown

You just need to pitch away from the entrance/road and it’s ok. The only noise we could hear was the bleeping from a reversing crane. That said, the site can’t be described as peaceful. The rear borders the harbour where folks like to sit out with a drink by the adjacent pub until fairly late. The water sports centre on another boundary is busy most days and evenings and some of the residents in the flats on the other side have been known to enjoy a party at the weekend. That said, generally it all tends to wind down by 10:30 and should not put anybody off. It’s a great site, one of my favourites.

We've stayed there a lot SBill and I love the harbourside but I've reached my limits. In any case I have family in central Bristol so I won't be missing out. smile

Has anybody seen the one review not happy folk at all. We have never stayed there as not our sort of site but can see why it is popular, and the club will not spend money if it does close in January.

Yes the reviews are reflecting the site is being run down to it's closure but it has never been a place that people use for relaxing  on site but as a base for exploring Bristol. I have to say that I will miss the luxury of unlocking the harbourside gate and stepping into the lovely waterfront! The water taxis and trips into the city are totally unique. smile

When we stayed a few days ago it was nothing like as bad as indicated in that review. The facilities were clean and the rest of the site appeared as it always has, a pleasant city Aire rather than a destination site. However, it would seem that facilities mentioned as broken down / closed  at the end of August, are still in that state. Either that or they have been fixed and others broken.  Either way, hopefully the club will carry out these relatively low cost plumbing repairs. The site will almost certainly be full until it closes and they will be raking in plenty of cash.

As to noise from the repair works, we didn’t notice anything significant, however we did notice the road past the site was much quieter on a night. I suspect the statement on the site page is there to cover eventualities like a bit of pile driving for bank stabilisation. If they did any that would certainly be annoying.

Yes, I meant to add a couple of photos yesterday, but things ground to a halt for me on the web site.

So here's Gromit and also a photo of the harbour festival, usually held in July. Let's hope the new caravan site will be up and running and people can continue to enjoy these things once more. smile
