At the end of September we are looking to move sites from Tavistock to a site near Gretna Green, going to break my duck and look for a club site midway between the 2 that is very close to the M6, would only be a 1 night stopover midweek, dont want to drive thru country lanes miles from the M6undecided

We towed from either Plymouth or Cornwall to Moffat many times and broke the journey with an overnight stop in or around the Midlands. We used either the Malvern clubsite or a nearby CL. Alternatively, we would get to the other side of Brum and stop at Uttoxeter Racecourse or, more conveniently, a good CL (Stable Park) just outside Stafford.

You are probably looking at a stop somewhere in West Midlands area Rufs. Not sure of what’s close to M6, but think Warwick or Uttoxeter Racecourses won’t be too far away from Motorway. Failing that, a CL search might be best.

Edit: Warwick won’t fit the Bill, way too Far East of M5.

Depends which side of the country you use. If rather than the M5 /M6 you switch across on the M42 to the M1/A1M then A66. Which although about 50 miles further, often does not take much extra time according to Google. You could use either Chapel lane after about 190 miles, a couple of miles off the M42, or Poolsbrook country park, a similar distance off the M1 after about 270 miles.

Depending which sites are open, Malvern and Tewkesbury are the best bet. Keep an eye on the weather regarding Tewkesbury (floods.)Then just keep going north M5/M6. Don't divert to Chapel Lane that's on the M5 toll/M1 route and not necessary from the SW, a longer route. As an alternative there are good CLs near the M6 in Cheshire.

PS from Taunton, at present, due to road works etc it's taking us at least 6 hours to reach S Lakes. So allow for delays etc. Add on extra time for Tavistock.

Thanks for this brue, did a double take and you are right Chapel lane is not as convenient as Malvern hills, and Malvern Hills is cheaper probably because no svc pitch available, will not be travelling this route until end of Sept so hopefully traffic will not be quite so bad laughing

It's a straight up and down run Rufs but quite a long haul. The scenic drive through Cumbria is the best bit! Have a good journey. smile

You're right, Chapel Lane is off your route. As Brue said, it's straight up the M5/M6 and direct to Gretna.

We stayed at Malvern in July and it’s 10 miles from the M5. Chose it over the CL at Droitwich Spa Marina but would likely go for that next time at only 2.5 miles from the M5.

Have to say though that the food at the Hanley Swan Inn was superb so maybe not!

Also stayed in York and initially booked Beechwood but changed to York Caravan Park as it looked more appealing and it was a good choice especially if you like huge individual shower rooms with toilet and basin.

Tewkesbury is the nearest to the M5, with fuel and a supermarket on the way in, 10-15mins drive.

Tewksbury junction 9 M5 to club site is 1.5 miles and is by far the most direct and easiest site for a stop over

Unfortunately it is far too soon if he wants to drive equal distances on both days.

It's unfortunate that Birmingham was placed exactly where we want to break our journeys. That’s why we generally head for Staffordshire going north and the Malvern area heading south.

No doubt Rufs will decide the best plan for him and allow for the first few miles via Tavistock and Mary Tavy being slow ones.

A bit further on than Tewkesbury, though still south of Birmingham, can recommend Woodlands Farm CL, within easy reach of M5 J6 (I think). Ideal for a stop over and family friendly chain type pub just up the road for a reasonably priced meal. smile

Good choice ttda, we have used that CL a couple of times in the past. Very handy for a stopover and little time lost.

If it was me I would still push on beyond Birmingham before stopping for the night.

Chapel Lane, just south of Birmingham might be an option - within easy reach of the M42

There's also High Onn - get off at Juncion 12 of M5 (I think).  No toilet block though...

Hi Rufs, I guess you are starting from the Woodovis site again - you are a rarity on here!  Try the Horn of Plenty hotel restaurant nearby if you fancy a posh lunch.

Going north we often leave  the M5 at Tewkesbury after the unequal struggle to creep past Bristol, then on via the Evesham and Alcester by passes. That points you straight to the Chapel Lane club site at Wythal - although we often aimed further east to see how Marc and Angela had developed their smart site at Somerswood. We remember them first starting.   Adults only these days.

From Somerswood you are straight on to the M6 toll road next morning and miss the worst of the Birmingham and the Black Country traffic.
