Route to Buxton
Advice please for best Caravan friendly route to the Buxton site when travelling south on M1 from West Yorkshire. I appreciate the route can be arranged via google but that's not always the most appropriate when towing. I will use the club directions when approaching the site. Happy to take a longer rout if that's the best option.

I can see from my logs that I went from Rosedale Abbey to Buxton in August 2014. I came down the M1 to junction 37 at Barnsley (that's the one with the longest slip roads ever!!).
I then went over the moors to Woodhead and cut down to Glossop, Chapel en le Frith and finally to Buxton. I described the entire journey as "tortuous and took forever". Mind you getting from Rosedale Abbey to the M1 would have been a big part of the torture which you avoid obviously.
If you are in West Yorkshire then I suspect that will be your best route (from the M1). Indeed, depending on how far west, I wonder if you need the M1 at all.

Buxton isn’t easy to get to from a lot of places. To be honest, it depends where your starting point is in West Yorks. If it’s Huddersfield/Holmfirth area, you might need to bite the bullet and do the route GJ suggests above. If you are closer to M1, you could negotiate Sheffield where the roads are wider, but the traffic is horrendous. Or head further South and head West via Chesterfield route. I was at college in Buxton for a couple of years, heading there from South Yorks one day a week, and it was a tortuous route back in the 1990’s solo.

If it was me I would head down the M1/A1 and come off at Chesterfield, go through the town (normal town roundabouts etc) then through Baslow and down to Ashford in the Water to avoid Bakewell and then head up to the Ashbourne to Buxton road, take the turn to Harper Hey (next to famous Bookshop) and through HH and turn left to Buxton site, about 1 mile down this road.
If you want you can stay on the Ashbourne to Buxton road (A515) and turn left at the first full sets of Traffic Lights in Buxton then follow the directions to site.
This way you avoid major cities like Sheffield and some passes.

To clarify I will be joining the M1 at Wakefield. I remember attending a seminar in Buxton years ago and the " Sat Nav" route was horrendous but being in a solo car meant I just stuck with it but couldn't have done so with a 7.3 meter van behind.

Wedgy I've towed the caravan on that route when we joined the M1 after leaving a site over near Bridlington on the way to a CL in the Peak District but I've been going to P.D. since I've had a caravan, over 30 years and had no problems with it. A bit of a faff maybe but safe enough.

I would take the M1south and leave at Junction 29, then A617 into Chesterfield and out the other side of that town on A619 via Baslow. Isn’t that exactly as Wherenext said?

If you do opt for the M1 Jn 37 (Dodworth)route and thence onto the A628 route be aware that if you take the B6105 turn it is tight and twisty, particularly if towing.Better to carry on until you reach the traffic lights at the "Gun Inn" and turn left onto the A6106.This will avoid the nasty bit but entails a wait at a notorious bottleneck in Tintwistle.Returning I would do the same route,as turning right out of the B6105 is very dicey due to oncoming heavy traffic.
Going to Buxton we turn left off the A628 onto the B6105 but return via the "Gun Inn" turning right at the very slow traffic lights.We are in a PVC and still avoid the right turn off the B6105 onto the A628 for safety reasons.
There has occasionally been talk of a road tunnel through the Pennines at this point to link the M1 to the M56 at Mottram Moor but only talk,sadly.We have to do this run frequently when visiting with our son's OH's family in south Manchester and it is a pain in the proverbials once you get to Mottram Moor/Tintwistle.

If coming from Wakefield, easiest route is M1 to Chesterfield, then as WN advises. It’s just a long winding route after Baslow, but nothing difficult. There are opportunities to pull in, but virtually none for overtaking, or being overtaken, so it’s foot down and a nice steady drive. Be aware it’s a route used by some big lorries as well at times, so it’s a drive to simply go with depending what’s on the road the day you travel. It’s a climb as well, but gradual rather than steep. Very scenic, Buxton is high up😁

Wedgy, when I said "that route" I meant the whole lot. I've done the Harpur Hey bit and the "ignore" HH bit but I do use the Ashford in the Water route.
I've done it going from Buxton to East Yorkshire and done it coming back from there as well.
As Ttda states there is not many overtaking areas and a few turn offs to look out for, specifically the one that takes you round to Ashford, but it is on main roads.

If you are coming from Wakefield i would avoid much of the M1 altogether. As you suggested come off at J37 and follow A628, past Penistone, Flouch roundabout, over the top through Tintwhistle, hang a left at the lights to Glossop, follow Buxton signs. If anyone thinks that route is scary then you have lived a sheltered caravan towing life. I live near Denby Dale and when we take our van to Glossop caravans for warranty or repair work, we head to Flouch via local Lanes and then follow the A628. Yes it can be busy, and it ain’t fun in summer in horizontal snow. To Glossop can often be as quick as crossing Huddersfield to get Lowdhams.
