Campsites or caravan sites

Am I being old fashioned in not liking the term campsites that now seem to be the in word to describe our cherished Caravan and Motorhome Club Sites. Although some of these locations allow tents, surely we should not refer to them as campsites.

Hi Second Youth. I'm not sure this should be in the story section. Your not being old fashioned at all. In fact, I would think that you were old fashioned if you did like the term campsite and there's nothing wrong with being old fashioned. By the way, I am sure you will get some nice comments as well.

Can't say that I was ever aware of looking down on campers. It does seem daft using the term campsite for sites that do not have a facility for tents though.

I disagree, Compo. It is extremely old fashioned, divisive and a lot of other things I probably shouldn't say here.

The club is trying to be inclusive and this sort of thinking is exactly what it is trying to get away from in an effort to encourage younger folk and families to join.

If just wanting to call a Caravan Site a Caravan Site rather than a camp site is causing division and looking down on tenters then the Caravan and Motorhome Club made a big mistake when they changed their name. Surely they should have called it the Camping Caravan and Motorhome Club or the campsite club, just to show they were being inclusive and wanting to encourage younger folk and families.

Campsite is fine with me.Let's not go down the American way and have 4 or 5 words when 1 explains what it is.

It's interesting if you look up the definition of camping and outdoor recreational activity. It would be a pity to lose the word "campsite" as it's been going a long time and has some history to it. smile

Surely the word "Campsite" is the generic term for somewhere that you camp. If you narrow it down to Caravan Site you are suggesting that tents and motorhomes are not welcome? Also the word Campsite is shorthand as it gets a bit messy when you say caravan and camping site or caravan and motorhome site. Now for the OP the term Caravan Site might be nostalgic but surely he has to accept it's not as inclusive as Campsite?

    Second Youth,

What would you wish to call a site that allows or even welcomes  people  with  caravans, folding caravans, trailer tents,  folding campers, camper vans, motorhomes, 5th wheelers  and possibly has pods, lodges and static Airstream caravans and may have places for tents?

Could one answer be Caravan and Motorhome Club sites?

An alternative name could be Caravan Club sites.

When we joined CC in 2002 the above were welcome although some sites did not have spaces for tents, 5th wheelers were almost unknown and there weren't pods, lodges or static caravans on CC sites.

I'm not sure whether your post is meant to be tongue in cheek, possibly amusing or whether you think that only caravans should be allowed on CAMC sites.

Compo, it's not just the name but the inference the attitude portrays.

Does it matter what the piece of land that tents, caravans or motorhomes stay on is called ?

To me it’s a camp site , other people can call it what they want

    That is true in France.

In German the term is wohnmobile and Dutch use the term camper for motorhomes.

Not sure what was wrong with my post. I offered a definition of camping, that was all🤷‍♀️ It wasn’t rude, it wasn’t political, it wasn’t divisive? So I am puzzled....

Ah, the penny has dropped, thanks WTG. I was using a verb. (The action of staying in seasonal homes.) Other minds obviously work differently to mine. 😕

It was genuinely innocent. But I have to admit I am laughing now. 🤣 I shall be giggling every time I now look at holiday cottages.

I suppose it could have been classed as being off topic so to speak, although it could happen on camp sites or caravan sites, whichever you prefer.

For those of you who missed the Deleted User posts - takethedogalong post made me smile, it was obviously written in all innocence 😯 it did sum up ways of holidaying well - just a shame some words have been hijacked.

Scroll down the latest activity page and the 'offending' word appears posted by Deleted User User.  The latest activity page working strangely acts in odd ways and should help you resolve the mystery....... when you click on the post it brings up the Deleted User post. I've never seen reference to a Deleted User post before in latest activity, deleting wiped away all traces......

I note that the OP has not made any further comment on this subject, and who can blame him. I may be wrong, but I assume this may have been one of his first posts, if not his first post, on the forum. I would suggest that he created the discussion with no malice intended at all, however he is immediately accused of having a stuffy attitude, being divisive, looking down on tenters, and a lot of other things which can't be said on the forum. Wow, just for saying he prefers to call a campsite a caravan site. Where is this country going if we can't call something a caravan site instead of a campsite. I think people look into things a bit too deeply sometimes. What is even worse, there is not just one poster who believes the OP is all of these things but several.

Moderator Comment - The OP posted this is the Story Section but as it wasn't really a story it was moved here. Perhaps it wasn't even a discussion so the expectation that the OP would comment wasn't going to happen?
