Hello all,

At some point in the near future I will be changing our current tow car and considering a used GLE300D, they have been out a year and was wondering if any members here have used one for towing and could share there thoughts.

Not quite  .... I have a ML350 and it tows my large twin axle with ease. If going for the GLE I'd go for the 350 rather than the 4 cylinder 300 ..... ie more cylinders than doors 😉😉 though the spec of the 300 does loom pretty good.

    I tow with a GLE350, 3l V6. Pulls like a train all day long.

Factory fitted tow bar that operates on the flick of a switch. ED above has one too.

If you don't get a ff tow bar check the cooling fan is capable, the wiring is fully coded to the car. With my previous W221 S350 it was a no brainier to get a retro fitted OEM tow bar and electrics c/w cooling fan change. Over heated gearbox £12k, fan £80 + fitting.

I suppose it depends on the weight of the van you tow as to the choice of 300 or 350 model. both nice cars though.

No it doesn't.  The difference in kerb weight (I know Lutz .... 😉) between the 4 & 6 pot cars will be negligible. The 6 pot will just tow the OP's caravan far far easier.

I'll leave MTPMLs etc to watto

    thanks for the replies,

We tow an elddis cyclone 1900 mtpml with a 2.2 santa fe with 200ps with no hassle power wise but at top end of weight matching so a the 2ltr 245ps gle300 should be sufficient, The 6 cylinders are proven workhorses but wanted some real world views on the 4 cylinder unit.

    cheers all.

I strongly considered the GLE 350 or 400 just recently, as all the reviews I read suggested these to be better tow cars than the 300, perhaps not surprisingly. I was looking for a factory fit towbar vehicle of less than 12 months old, across a short list of about 5 marques/models. Many of these so-called higher end marques can get very ‘nervous’ with retro fit towbars, because of the complex electronics. In the end, I opted for a BMW X5, partly but not solely because I couldn’t find a GLE with my required spec. Now perfectly happy with x5. (Incidentally, my previous vehicle was also the Santa Fe, and my reason for change was also weight related)

As an aside, I did try to contact the Mercedes affinity scheme with CMHC (as per the process outlined on this website), to see what price a new one would be, but didn’t even get the courtesy of a reply!
