I have just had my annual service done by approved supplier on returning it the gas hose was connected at gas bottle but left as an open end where it connects to the regulater. I was under the impression that the leaving of an open ended gas pipe was illegal,Am I correct??

You’re thinking of domestic supplies. LVs in private use are not covered by the same regs.

I do not think it would be illegal but a bit poor to expect you to reconnect it,?  is the rubber hose life expired ,they should have changed it  and /or advised you

Hope I'm not hijacking this thread but I have an allied question.  I normally have a Safefill cylinder in the front locker together with a 6kg Calor - both connected to an automatic change-over regulator.  The Calor is just there for 'emergencies'.

I have recently taken the Calor out on the basis that we use so little gas that the single Safefill is more than adequate for our needs.

This means that one pigtail isn't connected to anything.  Now, on the basis that the regulator is always selected to supply from the Safefill, is this arrangement still safe or should I remove the 'spare' pigtail completely and find a blanking plug for the other connection into the regulator?

I’m no expert but I like the idea of me ensuring the gas supply is ready & safe to use. If it had been taken off by anyone & reconnected I’d personally take it off again to check the seal was true & all components were in good working order. It’s my safety, my life, my responsibility👍🏻

How far do you take that though R. When they serviced our caravan that also included the brakes and a gas check on emission levels of gas appliances. Do you double check those? Personally if I had paid for a professional service, I would expect the van returned in a ready to go and safe condition. Unless it came with a report to the contrary.

I check everything I am capable of checking, to work on anything I am not qualified to do would be counter productive. Our lives are put into the hands of professionals every day I accept that. Gas(the silent killer) is a particular worry of mine.

although it is not illegal to fit or remove an y gas fitting that belongs to you in your home or other places ie mobile unit etc .its illegal for any person to repair or fit any gas fitting whilst being paid to do so and the gas installation should be tightness tested [sometimes called soundness test] before and after any work has been carried out the hose should have been refitted so that a function test could be carried out  You should check the engineer has the correct certification to work on mobile units .and you can take it further with Gasafe as this type of work comes within their remit
