Travelling to East Sussex

We are travelling very early morning from the North East of England to East Sussex. We know we will be arriving too early to get onto our designated site.

I would therefore really appreciate any helpful suggestions where we might stop for an hour or two preferably within an hour of Crowborough. Don't mind if it's a large lay-by just somewhere safe to stop.
