Kendal to Hawes with 6m motorhome

Tuesday possibly sees us off for our first trip since lock-down, husband currently not 100% (not Covid ) hence the 'possibly'. As part of the trip we will be moving from Kendal Club Site to Hawes Club Site in our 6.5 metre Autotrail Tracker motorhome with a 2.3 L engine. The club site directions suggest the A684 route through Sedburgh is not suitable for towing. Does anyone know if the road will be alright for us in the motorhome? Similarly is the direct route from Hawes to Grassington on the B6160 possible for us or should we travel all the way out to Leyburn then round to Ripon/Harrogate/Skipton ? Advice gratefully received.

    Some friends of ours did a reci in their car from Grassington to Hawes via that b road and decided that  with their motor caravan it would be IFFYsurprised

    Not sure about the other route?

    I think that I went via junction 38 with caravan

    The direct A 684 road from Kendal  via Sedbergh is a lovely drive with a Motorhome, and milk tankers, school buses and delivery vans manage it too. The journey will only take an hour so I suggest you might like to call for lunch or a drink at the Moorcock Inn at Garsdale Head so that you don't get to the Club site too early.

    Thank you eurotraveller, that is very helpful. I plan to stop in Sedbergh on the way, for a wander, parking in the Joss Lane car park where there are two spaces for long vehicles. That way we won't be too early for arrival at Hawes. I am sure the wardens at Hawes will be able to offer help with the Hawes to Grassington route. We are both confident drivers but wouldn't want to damage the sides of the van on very tight corners. I think beautiful places in England are going to busy this year with 'staycationers'.

    I have just checked the menu at the Moorcock Inn and they do Sunday roast! That would make us a little later to site but it solves the cooking/eating problem very nicely. Thank you for making me look eurotraveller, That will do nicely.

    You might consider using the B6255 from Hawes to Ingleton and then the A65 to Skipton  and then the B6265 to Grassington. That way you will pass the Ribblehead Viaduct, a sight worth seeing. The Ingleton to Hawes road is the one recommended for caravans.

    Personally I would use the A65 to Ingelton and then B6255 across to Hawes. The Sedburgh route I wouldn't find particularly pleasant or relaxing in a MH, particularly if I wasn't 100%. Yes it is used by Milk tankers and delivery vans but some take the narrow bends far too fast. Given both routes are a similar distance and as NH says you go past the Ribblehead Viaduct, it would be my preference.

    I have certainly towed along the B6255 past the viaduct into Hawes a couple of times in the last 7 or 8 years and it is a pleasant route

    Whatever route - beware of bikers on Sundays. Notorious routes for accidents.

    Thank you for all the advice, very useful and helpful. Husband well enough today to commit to the trip from tomorrow so the van is packed, the pots are moved for watering and the cat is looking sad - we will be off to Warwick for the first night then on to Kendal. Being a Cumberland girl it will be nice to get home for a few days, a long way from Hampshire, and a chance to visit family and graves. Fingers crossed for some fair weather.

    I drove it last year a couple of times (just a car) and it is not unusual for road closures and diverts.  The diverts were a struggle in a car!  Suggest you check google maps live time traffic info before you set off just in case.  One of the closures for me was a road k prove meant scheme so notified in advance

    I have towed from kendal to hawes and back several times with a mondeo est and a 16ft van and had no problems to speak of sedbergh is the only real town and has a oneway system around the centre  it is a hilly drive but shouldnt cause any problems
