Next weekend we are travelling up to Grassington in the Yorkshire Dales (not towing, we've booked a cottage.)

Has anyone travelled north up the M6 from BIrmingham to Preston just lately? We're planning to head that way, but last time we did it the road works were horrendous. Hoping for some more up to date information in case we need to look at an alternative route.

All advice gratefully received!  smile

Not travelled recently, but there are longterm roadworks between jn 13-15, from Stafford to Stoke.  Another one of the so-called "smart" motorway upgrades surprised

It's quite a distance between those junctions, about 16 miles.

On the plus side, the smart motorway between jn 16-19 has been completed wink those also lasted about 3 years or so.

It's often the luck of the draw on the day.  Travelling on a Sunday, setting off around 8.30-ish (we live about 15 miles south of Preston) which we usually do down that stretch, is usually ok.  But a Saturday afternoon in July would be a different matter.

    Safe travel.

If you are unlucky as so often happens. The motorway will be closed northbound from junction 31 because of an accident which is a regular occurrence. So allow for  2 or 3 hours extra.

A couple of years ago I set off from Ambleside to Preston at 6pm a journey of 65 miles and arrived home at 12.30 am because of motorway closed but that was southbound. You might be lucky the accident which is a regular feature up here might be Southbound.

Thanks Ina - we're probably coming up in the morning so hopefully not too bad. Presumably it's just the 50mph limit on that stretch? Good news about the second stretch though! 👍

Yes, the usual 50mph limit.  On another note, through and just north of B'ham there are often variable speed limits, of course they're part of the smart motorways.  Can be really annoying though, sometimes they change up, then down at the next display, you really need to be on your guard, they are mandatory of course.

Should not affect you at all but had notice yesterday that resurfacing of  M6 between junctions 26 & 27 both north and south bound will start on 29 July for approximately three weeks.

The good news for all of you is that it will be done 9pm to 5am Monday to Friday and 9pm to 7am weekends. However we may have more  sleep interrupted nights to follow on from the night time bridge works of the last 4 months.

Went from Warrington to Blackpool 10 days ago and all was clear but afraid I don't know about before Warrington.

Best to check Highways England website for roadworks. What happens on the day is of course in the lap of the gods!!!
