Would also add that if the weather's hot (hopefully! ) a good option for walking with a dog is Tehidy Country Park - you're not far from there - on the road to Porthtowan. smile

Thanks for all the replies. Looked on google maps & the walk on the SW coastal path past the lighthouse looks a good one so Buddy & I will be doing that.

I think that’s a wise decision, FB. Climb to the top and look down into the cove where the seals are, as M described👍🏻

Buddy will enjoy that walk FB - he looks a real cutie - good to see a dog still celebrating Christmas too!  laughing

Whatever you do though, do not let him off the lead - the cliffs along that stretch are sheer - the first time we took our old boy George on that walk we let him off thinking he'd just plod along beside us but of course he wanted to see over the edge - talk about a heart in the mouth moment - luckily his recall was pretty good and he came back to us.  But sadly each year dogs are lost over those cliffs.

I was thinking the same Moulesy, the approach is gentle with little rocky bays but as you advance higher the cliffs do too! If the NT is able to open up their café by the car park the food is good and there's room outside to eat in good weather. I suppose this year will be the year of the long queue for everything but some places are worth the queue! wink

FB, Porth Kidney Beach is where you want to be! It’s our favourite doggy beach, and seldom gets busy, even in August. It’s over the River Hayle, and as M says, park at St Uny Church, or if it’s still possible, you might be able to park down at Dynamite Quay, at low tide walk along river, and then turn left onto fabulous beach. Word of warning though...whatever you do, don’t be tempted to try and cross the River. It treacherous, looks easy, but folks drowned in there😱 A fishing boat was dragged down in currents one year we were there.

Hayle is a wonderfully interesting place of you take time to explore. King George VI gardens along the tidal pool are simply lovely. Some great independent shops along that main road through Hayle.

Can recommend Trevaskis Fruit and Farm Shop, Mr B’s Ice Cream Parlour, Philps Pasty’s of course.

If you can, get the MH off pitch and explore. The coast road, heading from top of St Ives all way down to Penzance is stunning scenery, and with care and luck, there are parking spots to get out and explore. It can be tight in places, but buses do it so don’t be phased! There are lots of wonderful pubs doing lovely food all over the area. We spent three months for 15 years exploring every nook and cranny of this area, but we still find new places to explore. Helston is a nice place, good shops. NT Penrose Estate, and NT Godolphin Estate have some great walks. Just watch Buddy round mine shafts.

We should have been down there September for Tour of Britain, but plans up in air at moment now Tour cancelled.

Hope you have a great time though, it is a lovely area.💖

I thought Tinwheeler's suggestion of renting a small car for a few days was a good plan.

    Thankyou.

I consider a hire car to be essential to see the more remote spots, especially if the MH is a coachbuilt, ie with flimsy side panels, and is sizeable. I also believe FB does not take his van off site once pitched so  could miss out on a lot of what we have to offer and public transport won’t really meet the need.

I think that's Mevagissey where the hire van is stuck. Sadly, it’s far from an unusual occurrence. I wonder if he lost his deposit?🤔

One has to be fairly intrepid to take a car of any size down into Mevagissey. Willow car park is certainly the "last chance saloon" for motorhomes.

Far easier to stay at the Little Winnick campsite and get the bus in from just outside the site.

Sorry folks, it was a St Ives photo I gave you, not Mevagissey - but there are other examples of fat motorhomes stuck in Padstow, Kingsand, Launceston, Fowey, Crafthole, and Port Isaac - and the road up the coast through Millook is a wonder to behold. This is not easy Motorhome country.

    Cheers, Euro.

Have you seen the one of the police van stuck? I think that was Meva.

To be honest, I think the same. It depends of course on size of your MH, ours is quite compact compared to most, but there are definitely places we wouldn’t go. Fowey, St Ives and Mevagissey way too tight. It’s one of the few places where a caravan is definitely king if you want to really get around.

We have rented cars in Penzance area. I used to take Mum and Dad down on train and would be met at station. It wasn’t that expensive for something small and well suited to the roads. Chap and his fleet was based in Long Rock I think, will take a look, so it’s not far from Hayle.

All of those locations can be visited in a MH with as much ease/difficulty as any other location in Cornwall

Fowey - main long stay. Walk or get minibus into town.

Mevagissey - Willow Car Park (overnight also available)

St Ives - Best is Rugby Club. Walk or get minibus if running. Car park by leisure centre also a possibility. Access to town centre currently restricted to essential traffic only.

Good access in all cases, just do some research beforehand and take note of the signs.

Thanks for that. Fully aware of car parks, fully aware of fools who try to drive through. In fact it’s one of our favourite spectator lunches. Pasty and a seat to watch folks get stuck. Along with watching Bodinnick Ferry taking on the yachts.....😁

When we visited Porthleven last year (stayed 5 nights at Godrevy) it was a sunny Saturday, just turned 11am and naturally very busy. We parked at Withy Field Car park by football ground. It was a minutes walk from the car to bus stop. About 30 metres from car park entrance.

It is only a 5 minute walk down (0.3 mile) but, even with a stick I didn't contemplate walking up. laughing I asked the driver the fair. He winked and said 'I can't seem to get one stop fair to show'. We had a pleasant wander round and sat on the green above the harbour. The pasties were wonderful. Just as we finished the bus pulled up right behind our seat - perfect timing. Same driver who said 'still can't get this machine to work.

So, how did it go, FB? Where did you stop? Hopefully, like us you missed the traffic madness later on Saturday. You needn't have been concerned about safety because all the lay bys on the A30 had plenty of vans and MHs doing exactly the same as you.

The weather on Saturday was a bit disappointing but it's behaving itself now so enjoy the rest of your time at Godrevy. smile

    Hi All,

Our journey and holiday went great. You may remember we had a 9am check in time  & we were travelling from Manchester. So we set off at 2am & apart from the M6 being closed tween J15 & 14 we sailed through. Traffic was light and we arrived at Gwithian at 9:10am, on our return journey we set off at 9am and again traffic was great and not once did we even have to slow down.

We had a great holiday and will book again for next year for either the same site or Godrevy Club site. One annoyance was that the site kept their toilet block closed but still charged the same price as if the toilet block was open. Next year we will travel through the night as it was so easy, we noticed a lot of lay bys both on the A30 and as TW & JW said closer to the site. With regard to the old gent in a motorhome in the lay by close to Godrevy that Jolly Kernow spoke about he's still there. When we drove past one day council staff dressed in full NBC suits were moving some of the rubbish around his van.

It’s good you had a great holiday, FB, and that the travelling went well.

I really like the club's Godrevy site and, even though it’s all grass, the sandy soil drains quickly.

I noticed the old guy's MH in the lay-by just a couple of weeks back.

Did you use your MH for travelling around or some other form of transport?
