Came across >this old film< from 1955 about a Caravan Club Rally. Presumable as it was the second one, the first might have been held in 1954. Was this originally what the first rallies were like? When did they stop or change to the current format of centres? It would be interesting to hear more about this from the Club perhaps in a magazine article? I just loved the old outfits in the film and it looks like the final parade etc was at Southport.

Marvellous PD. Some beautiful cars and vans. We did our own commentary as well😂

What a great peace of film to watch.  Don't see many RR towing caravans lately.  Good to see some of the old classy cars of the day, but I owned a couple of the car's in the film when they were getting on in age and went cheap,   a Ford and a vauxall both with big six cylinder petrol engines.      Happy days.

I bet the tow bar on the RR would have upset a few people! As above, some lovely old motors, the 'Cyclops' P4 was a rarity even its day and was that a Jag XK120 on the hill climb (8min 6 secs)

Not an extended mirror in sight .... and no messing about lift the back of the car on the jockey wheel when hitching back up. How did they all survive? 😏😏

And definitely at Southport for the final parade.

Those were the days, when men were men, and the women just polished bits😂 Although I did spot one fast young lady driving, and how thoughtful of VIP gent to check the caravan suspension after his ample good lady had climbed aboard🤣

I love the old caravans, superbly made and very interesting. We occasionally see rare examples when on CLs.

Did you notice the next Youtube video up was a rally from 1966?

Oh Gawd,  seeing the old Ford starting off  was delightful --  First gear, handbrake off, accelerate -- and watch the vacuum powered wipers stop  !!  wink

The Austin Cambridge/Westminster? was the same as our first tow car ,and the towbar was the rear bumper ,  with a steel bar behind it for "strength" with the tow hook bolts going through the bumper and barsurprised

ps it did have a four speed gear boxcool

    towed our Robin caravan OK?undecided

    Those were the dayslaughing

I swear I saw our old Bluebird😃. It would have been 6 years old in 1955.

What a great film, seeing some of those cars took me back to my childhood; my grandfather had a Shooting-Brake like the one on Princess Street. Happy days.smile

There aren’t many hills near Southport; they must have gone to Parbold for the hill climb test. Looking at the last bit Southport hasn’t changed that much around the boating lake area and you could see the old Big Dipper in the background, great stuff.laughing

    Thanks for posting this.

Fascinating to see these pictures of cars and caravans when I was but a "twinkle" in my parent's eyes. Made all the more interesting for me to see my home town and shots of Lord Street, the Marine Lake etc etc. Just hope that was not my impatient father overtaking the parade on Lord St, narrowly avoiding the camera! 😀
