A34 Sutton Scotney Services

Beware of contradictory signage when pulling in to Sutton Scotney Services on the A34 south bound with your caravan. On the approach slip road there are the on road directions for coaches and caravans to turn right. Excellent, as so often it is vague where caravans are to go. However there is a trap as when parked there are signs on posts warning of no parking for caravans with the threat of a £100 charge. By chance the service station wasn't busy and we were able to move across to the HGV area which appeared to be acceptable. I've written to Roadchef the operator about this but yet to receive a reply.

    Thanks for heads up.

We have actually spent a 1 night stop there but it was in the days when they had a designated parking area and one could overnight. Long gone now I'm afraid.

We have used Sutton Scotney a lot both north and south bound over many years. I had always understood that the open area (with the service building behind) was just for coaches although I have seen caravans parked there. I have always parked in with the HGV's on both sides of the road with no difficulty. I did see the sign on the northbound side of the road which does seem to indicate parking in the coach area on a recent visit so I can see the confusion. Be interesting to know if you get a reply from Roadchef!

not having much luck with servicesfrown....is this the same trip as the Norton Canes stop?

trying to work out where you were heading if south on A 34, then not far from a south coast destination?

hope you get responses from both your 'complaints'...

It was the same trip heading to the New Forest for a rare lightening meet with friends and family. The return on a Thursday was fine. I actually didn't mention that stopping at Warwick Services southbound on the M40 for a coffee there is a similar situation parking with caravan. The HGV area was busy, the coach park was literally empty but threatening signs of fines if anything else was parked there. I think that overall, with few exceptions, Service Stations don't welcome caravans and often don't clearly sign for caravan parking. I'll respond here if I get a reply from Roadchef.
