Planning for 2020

For those of you planning or wondering on trips I came across this on my fb page. What about a break in Essex? Plenty of CL or CS only the other club has a club site.
I know this is a promotion for train trip but it'll give you an idea about just one peninsular of this underrated county. Never seen TOWIE but I don't recognise my county from what I've heard about it! Just a small taste we are a very diverse county.

I think we are probably getting more laid back about planning things simply because often other things get in the way. In the early part of the year we look at the weather forecast for a period of dry weather and then book at the last minute. We have in the last couple of years gone away for three weeks in June and again in September with breaks for varying lengths in between. Sites are book no more than a month ahead. It would be nice to go back to Europe (I have enough Tesco Club Card points for a return trip on Eurotunnel) but we won't decide on that until nearer the time. I think a hobby like ours is unlike most types of holidays in that you don't have to book a year in advance unless you want to be on a specific site at a specific time.

We find what we fancy doing nowadays is totally different to what we fancied when we were planning our retirement.
Back then it was about flying to far flung places, nowadays I'm not that interested in doing that.
Australia and NZ was always on the list, as was Alaska and Canada. South America OH fancied but like me he's really not that bothered now.
China is a place we've both fancied and recently saw a cruise and stay tour taking in the places we fancied seeing. I think we will check it out and get more details but not until OH has his scan and result.
A winter cruise mid January might be on the cards if all is well.

"Australia and NZ was always on the list, as was Alaska and Canada"
We did the Canada / Alaska trip to celebrate our joint retirements, TG and it was truly a memorable holiday. Stays in Banff (which is wonderful) and then Vancouver followed by the cruise up to Glacier Bay which is eerily silent when the ship cuts its engines. Plenty of whale/dolphin spotting on the way and it was just at the end of the salmon run which is an amazing if rather sad spectacle. And a hike out on to the Mendenhall Glacier. Unforgettable!

Moulesy, Do you not find that these "unforgettable trips" really only happen once - if you return to the same place twice it is not as "unforgettable" as nothing beats that original 'Wow'
We might one day have a Canada/Alaska tour but first there are a lot of warmer places to see.

Well, yes, that's certainly the way I see things, Mikey. Because in our working lives we were always committed to school holidays the opportunities for world wide travel were a bit limited. Since retiring we have become far more adventurous and in recent years have visited Mauritius, Costa Rica and Sri Lanka as well as trips to both sides of Canada. We have also tried to get away for trips in Europe around September time when the weather is still warm enough to feel we're extending summer. But I'd go back to any of those places if it weren't for the fact that there is still so much of the world we haven't touched yet. A trip to the Caribbean is our next venture in February. As Joni Mitchell sang "still a lot of lands to see"!

We rarely plan more than a week or two in advance so no plans yet.
Our daughter + partner have suggested that we have a joint holiday in spring, so we'll talk about that when they visit at Christmas.
Other than that we hope to make good use of our NT membership and visit some more properties in north of England.

As we have been stuck indoors today due to the horrible weather, have been discussing were to go next year, but no plans made yet.

Why not try a Caribbean cruise, January or February is the perfect time for that.
Its the long flight time that puts us off Australia, when we were still diving it was to dive the barrier reef that we wanted to go for. However on one of our trips to Sharm el Shek diving we met up with some Aussies who said that Egypt was far better than the barrier reef.
We also liked Mexico somewhere between Cancun and Playa del Carmen, plenty of things to do great beaches and lovely warm seas, would go back there.
Moulsey, OH has been to Canada 3 times, he's been trying to get me there for at least 30 years now. Banff is one of his favourites. Used to want to go there to ski but as we don't ski anymore..........
I fancy Russia, St Petersburg and Moscow.

Not yet, - I'm not sure if I would like the early starts
It is one of those places that we have considered but it is not at the moment on top of our wish list.
I ( hopefully we) fancy the West coast of the USA and Hawaii or as OP suggested Bali - a rather nice romantic destination for our forthcoming Ruby wedding anniversary.

We did Bali, Singapore and Hong Kong in June. Hong Kong was a visit to DIL and our 3 grandchildren, then Bali for our son’s second marriage, (beautiful place for a wedding, if hot!!!), and then Singapore for a week. Would say, just at the moment, Singapore would be better than HK!! Also, personally, we prefer Singapore, especially for a short stopover. Good luck planning.

Having visited Dubai, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore earlier in the year. I have found that I really don't like the hot sweaty sticky heat of the tropics.
I was nervous about Dubai and the middle east but found that I liked it, the temp at the end of Jan/Feb was perfect.
Hong Kong, has never interested me I'm sorry to say. Singapore I loved and would go back there again for 4 or 5 days as a longer stopover. It won't happen though as I can't see us going to the far east again.
Finding somewhere to go in winter isn't really a problem as there are still so many places we haven't been.
I don't like holidays in hotels. I don't mind the odd night in a hotel before or after a flight. I prefer self catering accommodation for holidays or a cruise

Never dived Hurghada as we weren't qualified when we visted there, we did some snorkeling though but wasn't impressed at the area they took us. Never done MA either.
Speaking to a diving instructor in Lanzarote earlier this year she told us the diving in the Sharm area is once again fantastic, since the decline in flights from Britain. The reefs have had time to bounce back and are some of the best in the world now.
The diving off Cozumel is something to see, really glad we did that. Kind of miss those days

Planning 2020! That's what long winter evenings are for. We've only just finished clearing up after a month on QM2 to US and Quebec, so apart from a fleeting thought about the Rhine or Canal due Midi or possibly the Costa Verde, I haven't knuckled down to anything serious yet.

Yes, plans are afoot 🙂 Ferry is booked (Portsmouth-Caen) May 14th returning June 14th. We’ll initially be heading for the Dordogne and staying for a week or so. Then it’s...who knows?🙂 During late July, we’ll probably head north, staying somewhere in The Lakes before making the short trip to the Yorkshire Dales, maybe 3-4 weeks in total, weather depending. We were going to take our daughter and grandchildren to Normandy in August, but that has fallen through due to problems with passports (it’s complicated), so we’ll now probably take them to Cornwall, namely Trevornick just outside Newquay, early part of July. It’s a commercial site that has lots for the kids to do, and there just so happens to be a golf course on site Nothing else planned as yet, but since will both be retired by then, we’ll be able to go as we please, which is nice 🙂
