CL booking

Has anyone had a problem booking,Tudor Springs C L,Dunswell Road,Cottingham,nr Hull

I wanted to buy seats at the Hull Truck Theatre in Hull, so on checking online they had quite a few seats available in the first few rows of the stalls ,where we prefer to sit in theatres.I then checked for C L sites near to Hull ,within a taxi ride  or bus ride as we have a motorhome ,I found Tudor Springs and thought I had found the ideal site so gave them a ring , this was at 9am ,then the problem began, when the phone answers it says it is a call screening system and tells you to give your name , which I did and it then transfers you to an amswer service which tells you to book a pitch  by sending an email , .I decided to ring back a bit later thinking the answer service was on because I rang to early ,but each time I rang back it was the same ,so at lunchtime I did send an email request asking them to book me in for the 2 nights I wanted if pitches available as I needed to know fairly quickly to be able to book theatre tickets .as I had not had a reply by 6.30pm I thought I would ring again but the result was the same answer machine .I woke the next morning to find an email from them timed at 23.54  saying yes they had vacancies and it was £14 per night , not a confirmation that they had booked me in ,this was at 5.30 am I then emailed again asking for comfirmation as I needed to book tickets . I got a reply at 10.45 to say it was confirmed if I send a bank transfer for one nights stay ,but by this time the seats at the theatre had been sold .

I emailled again at 4.30pm to decline the booking as the theatre seats had gone and thought also it could be pointed out that some people might not have internet banking so struggle to send a bank transfer , I got  another email at 12.57 saying if I dont want to do it by bank transfer I could send a cheque 

All in all and uneccasary  episode that would have been avoided with the courtesy of a phone call

    I'm afraid you had a bad experience there. I suggest that for your next theatre visit you just book a room at the TravelLodge in the city centre - it will be dearer, but you can walk to the theatre and save a two way taxi fare, so cheaper in the long run - and less stressful.

    While I take your point that booking a room close to the venue would be easier but doesnt that  rather defeat the object of touring the country in a motorhome , it just happens that while touring about I like to visit  theatres in small and large towns and cities.

    This is the first time I have had such a problem to booking a CL especially one owned by a club member

    GDB, all CL owners of recent times have to be club members.

    I suggest you bring the issue to the attention of the CL department if you’re seeking rectification of this owner’s ways but, in your shoes, I would not have hung around waiting for a response but would have booked the tickets and rung other sites.

    I think I'd have given up on that particular CL when I got the answer machine the 2nd time. I've left text messages before now re bookings and they've either phoned or text me back later.

    We are booked into Tudor Springs for a visit in October.  No problem booking - e-mailed one evening, response later that night which I got next morning.  Deposit & mobile number sent, confirmation of deposit by text.

    GDB, I think that you were fortunate that you cancelled the booking. Tudor Springs is one of the few CLs that we would not consider ever visiting again. It might look fine on the club's web site but that doesn't show you the Electricity Generating station that's in front of the site, just over the railway line that runs past, which emits a continual whine day and night, or the caravan storage area directly behind.

    I live near this CL and pass it on the way to my parents.  Always has vans on, but suspect some are long term users.   It is, as Nellie says not the best location and the road to it is fairly narrow in places, however it is one of the few CL’s near to Hull.  There is a commercial site in Beverley that might suit - haven’t used it but is popular

    They are quite old reviews though most of them. A quick look on Google Earth showed up the huge electricity sub station Nellie mentioned, a motorcycle training venue, and a huge factory right across the road. Doesn’t indicate peace and quiet immediately. I would go with reviews from others like Nellie, as I know we share likes and dislikes in the main. 

    Bit further from Hull centre, and across Humber, but there’s a super CL called Alkborough Farm at Alkborough. Probably an hour from Hull centre. Mind you, it relies on taking MH into Hull to park up.

    If you are looking for a CL take a good look at CAMC page, photos, reviews.  A lot of CLs also have their own website and facebook page, which will have a lot more information on.  

    It should be remembered that reviews are that members opinion, of the site when they visited, everyone is different.

     As a CL owner reviews are very important to tell potential visitors a bit more about the site, however sometimes there are 2 sides to a story, and it should be remembered CL owners are unable to respond to reviews on the CAMC website.  

    There are also a number of facebook groups where you can find recommendations and reviews. 

    However, if you have any specific questions please contact the CL owner.  Please bear in mind CL owners often have other jobs, commitments and can’t answer all calls/reply to emails immediately, personally I always try to reply to any enquires the same day.

    Oh yes, some Club Sites are very expensive. Until, as we found when we went to Rose Theatre in York. We would never have thought of paying over £30 per night for a site, but then we though....we have the MH already, won’t get any kind of accommodation in York less than 400 metres from theatre with no parking charges for under £80-90 per night, so I booked us in at YRP and despite only living three quarters of an hour away, we had a very very enjoyable city centre break, even taking our dogs who had a ball in the Park next door. So for us, it was great value for money. If Bristol was closer, would be tempted to do same there as well.

    As for choosing a CL, narrow down what your needs are exactly, then start the hunt. For a new to us one, we look at reviews on here, photos if there are any, Google Earth, OS maps, reviews elsewhere such as UKcampsites, even Trip Advisor, Etc.... All will give you a fairly decent idea, particularly if I see a particular members name by review, as some of us CL users do chat to each other😁 We like to talk to CL owners as well if possible, either phone or email if we need to drill down anything we can’t find out, such as a decent dog walk close by, is local pub still open etc..... We are easily pleased, don’t need much in way of facilities, can cope on grass unless it’s been really wet, so we usually find some delightfully none busy, good priced bargains. But the more you need, expect to pay a bit more, even in some instances as much as some Club Sites. But there are some very decently priced CLs out there offering a great deal. 

    It’s a shame that there’s no private message system on here to share CL details. If you take a look on Caravanchat website, this has lots of different sites with photos for whole of UK areas, and an Overseas section. Hope this helps😁

    CL owners can and do respond to reviews, mpig, owners often thank reviewers or use the medium to put the record straight.

    We did two theatre visits on our recent trip north, I made sure we could get a pitch at the same time as booking the tickets. I paid premium pitch prices as we wanted to be close to the theatres. If we had a car with us it might have given us more scope. For most sites of whatever type I look at google earth if I don't know the area. I've had experience of CLs which take a long time to respond, I've hung on till I make contact but if time was short I'd swiftly move on to one that did respond. Other than that one person's perfect CL is another one's none starter. You just have to decide for yourself.

    The only way to find out if reviews can be trusted is through experience. It's the same with restaurants and plays etc. You gradually remember those reviewers names whose opinion is close to your own.

    There are several active CT members whose opinion I would be happy to take and some reviewers that do not participate in the forum but whose names crop up regularly on the review section in individual CL details. Over time I know which ones to trust and which ones to avoid.

    It's time consuming gradually building up a list of trustworthy reviewers.

    Mind you if we only took things at face value we would accept that every single CAMC site was a 5* one.smile

    That huge factory is a Swift 😂.

    It is true there is a huge caravan storage facility next to the substation and I believe the site also does storage however its location to go into Hull and Beverley is good with a train station a short walk away.  Not one I would choose to stay at though.  

    We also like Alkborough, one of our local haunts- in fact we’re there again in a couple of weeks. I think it’s called College Farm though if you need to look it up.

    WTG the following extractions above are a great indication of how I select a CL. Also I try and stick to the more recent reviews, as sites can change a lot over a couple of years, and I make a note in my SD of those recommended on CT by regular CL users. We have very seldom been disappointed when follow these recommendations ....perhaps we're just easy to please.wink

    (And totally off topic – well maybe not quite as OP was about a theatre booking – I refer to post re theatre performance reviews – I make a point of reading no reviews before I see a production, preferring to make my own judgement. Reading afterwards, I do trust Michael Billington in The Guardian. He is usually really acute, insightful and incisive.)

    This proves the point of trusting a Reviewer from previous or known experience no matter what is being reviewed.
