Why are we always disappointed by CLs?

Well done Richard & Ross, that is the only way to be reasonably sure of the quality of the site.
Have done it several times and not yet been disappointed at the choice eventually made.
If you have camping rellies, listen to what they find as well.
In my case daughter has come up with a couple of excellent sites

- like the one near Filey that described the 'wonderful views of Filey Brigg' - which looked like a travellers camp and Filey Brigg was only visible if you stood on the caravan roof!
I know what you mean there R&R. We once stopped on CL at Fareham said you could see the cruise ships on theSolent. All we could see was a big hedge. Like you we would have to stand on the roof to see them

We have stayed on a handful of CLs over the years and never been disappointed, given the low cost. In fact, I usually sat in the van and worked out - 5 vans per night (maximum) multiplied by number of nights in high season = some ridiculous low revenue per annum which always made me wonder - why on earth do they do it?

Sounds good and very convenient. Who wants to look at cruise ships anyway - huge hideous things.

I use club site almost exclusively from the point of view of consistency of facilities. The CL's I have stayed on have varied enormously, even with the same alleged facilities. The best was a Cromer which had a bathroom better than home to the worst at Lymington which were awful. Both described with same symbols. Better now pictures on website.

I think if you realise that CLs are totally different from Club Sites that it helps. Depending what you want and need, there’s usually something that suits out there. 😊

I 've never had any reason or desire to look for a site of any kind within 15 minutes of Portsmouth. I'm sure Nellie might be able to help you out though
Me neither, M, and we might have visited lots of CLs but there are one or two we've not tried yet.
One that I think that would please AD is Arden, No.631 in the Site Directory, which was recommended by Ian Kelly. I guess the one AD used was Carefree Nurseries which too has good reviews;0 -
The phrase "they don't come any better" is, surely, a comment on the quality which has proven significantly impressive. To follow its strictest interpretation would require a visit to every single CL on the network, something which even the most ardent CL'er is unlikely to have achieved.
The only requirement of this thread is "if you see Sid, tell him".

That is the way I see it CY but then I am not picky on strict adherence to terminology as I appreciate that phrases such as simply the best are not intended to be taken as 100% factual. Simply means very good from the users perspective

Top CL tip......choose your reviewers with care. There are the good, the bad, and the downright useless.

Agree about Horn House, not visited Ashieburn House but will add it to our list, Corners, and Low Moor is outside of our price bracket. Thanks for the list.

Thanks Rocky and tda in your kind words. I doubt that I'll ever get the time to get round to writing the handbook. We know what type of sites we like, and only select those within our price limit, and am glad that I can pass the relevant details on for others to peruse and choose to visit if it agrees with their requirements. I try to keep a note of other CLs that we've not visited but have been recommended by others on here, so do have a longish list of sites that CL users might be interested in visiting.

I wouldn't say that Shoulthwaite is better than Patterdale Hall but it is a very nice CL and the oldest one on the network. The original owners are still going strong in their 80s and a lovely couple. It's set into the hillside a bit so depending on your pitch you may find a bit of sloping. Nicely set back from the road and beautiful views towards St.John in the Vale. Handy for Keswick or the Langdales. We enjoyed our time there.

We’re new caravanners ... our first night was in March this year. We decided at the outset that CLs would be our preferred option ... we don’t need facilities apart from hook-up. We did our research as best we could for each site and this year have had nine stays, including an 11 night main holiday. Nine different sites, and all have been great. Some exceptional in setting and views. Did we have beginners luck or are we just happy with the fact that CLs are likely to be a field with a couple of emptying points and a tap? I can see how the odd one might be below par but all of them?? Really?
We’ve worked out that nine holidays have cost less than £800 for all site fees, days out inc parking and entry fees, meals out, cups of tea etc etc .. not including fuel. I think that’s amazing ... and we are very grateful for CLs. Already looking at next year. The reviews on the club website really helped us when choosing and we are impressed!
