Adult only sites

Sadly the thread where I was going to post this has been closed but it is a different slant on the subject of empty pitches on some sites in peak season so here goes.

We have just left a C&MC site to travel to a commercial adult only site The Club site was in my which in my estimation only about halfway full, the commercial site is full. Would the introduction of Club adult only sites at selected venues tempt you out in peak season at peak rates?

Very unlikely as the surrounding area would still be too busy for my liking.

Lets not forget that the AO concept would exclude and alienate a huge chunk of the membership and go against the ethos of all members having equal chance to use all sites. You would soon hear cries of "I've paid my membership fee but can’t use sites x, y and z".

    No.

Without knowing the two sites I would be guessing that it might be to do with facilities?

Only time we use peak season/peak prices site is to be with family.

Adult only sites from any provider are not a draw for me. If one were at a location that I was visiting on a tour I might use it but location along my chosen route is far more important. Nothing could tempt me out much before 28th August. I also use the bulk of August to catch up on chores at home

Not something that we have particularly looked for, while we tented, had a caravan, or now with a MH. I don't think we have ever stopped on one in all our camping lives. The closest we have come is an adult only section of a Morris Leisure site. So for us they would hold no particular attraction over and above a standard site.

My view is that club sites should remain open to all, otherwise we are in danger of introducing two tier membership where members with children are not permitted to use certain sites at certain times.

We were on an adult only site just a couple of weeks ago (there are plenty out there! ) ; we didn't choose it for that reason - it was where we wanted to be and it was a small site. We'd still have chosen it for those reasons if it hadn't been adult only.

So, no, we probably wouldn't be any more likely to use a large club site in peak season if it were adult only.

We have in the past used sites which were small private and farm CLs or CSs which were adult only and better still dog free too ( to protect the livestock) .... Absolute bliss, and I would choose similar again if available, but still wouldn't pay the high £25+ prices the clubs charge in peak for any site. We look to seek out sites in an area unlikely to be chosen by families in school holidays which are usually cheaper as well.

Where from and where to ? are both sites similar capacity with the same facilities? and price range? until that is made clear then others cannot agree or otherwise, surprised

Perhaps they should consider child only sites by way of balance. Herd all the little darlings in a field together and lock the gate. Come to think on it, I attended a few of those in my teens, great fun.

Not for us, not because of the children, or the price we normally have only just returned from over there so don't tour during July/August, mainly because of crowded roads, crowded venues etc and we live by the sea with our own hardstanding alongside the bungalow so we can sit in the caravan and pretend we are away. We do use AO (Tranquil) sites but mainly because some are in very good locations and are relatively small and for us small is good. Bingham Grange was a classic, sadly now a club site.

We have stayed on adults only sites but don't seek them out. The main reason for us using them when we do is simply because they are in an area we want to visit and there may not be a convenient alternative Club or commercial site. I think it would be completely against the ethos of the Club to create adult only sites, hardly inclusive?

No definitely not we have just spent a week in Southport site two weeks ago nothing better than watching the kids enjoying themselves, yes they sped past us on the bikes and scooters as kids do didn't bother me at all, not like on some sites where adults walk across your pitch for short cut. The club is a here for everyone so lets all enjoy it, as for being half full maybe its time to look at the pricing

    Noooooooo! Never! Keep all inclusive.

We had a similar thread a few years ago and the opinion of the many has not changed it seems. Then,  I recall, folk were asked which sites would lend themselves to such a restriction and why that site particularly.  None at all came forward if my memory serves me right.

Again a big no from me.

The club should cater for all its members

And what about all that lost income?

If i'm honest ,it wouldn't bother me either way if there was a few AO sites , perhaps because I don't see it as a club ,but just a leisure industry selling pitches and if the market demand changes they maybe they might have to , but it seems there is not a lot of demand for change

Well I would be in favour of it.  I agree with Husky that to see this organisation as a club is, in my opinion, outdated.  It might have been in 1907, but it certainly isn't now.  We regularly use AO sites - mainly CLs and CS's - and always during school holidays and of the 'Club' sites we go to, we favour those without facilities since they are more inclined to be child-free.

We have never actively sought out AO sites, and like most others are happy for Club Sites to welcome all ages. Experience has taught us which type of Club Site to use if we venture out in school holiday times, that’s why I find some reviews very amusing sometimes. You don’t go to a coastal resort such as Brighton, Scarborough, Blackpool Etc... and expect peace and quite, but it can still be found at Sites such as Nunnykirk, Bromyard, Warwick, Exeter Racecourse. Small, limited or no facilities, away from main resorts are usually fine.

The Club offers something for almost everyone, in some place, most of the time. Let someone else provide the private AO Sites, but as someone astutely pointed out, off an AO site, it might still be very busy.

There are other factors than children that keep us away from Club Sites during school holiday times.😁

Btw PD, firstly glad to see you are using club sites, secondly could you perhaps name the two sites? Or as you don't normally do that, could you give some idea of size and cost? Are they even in the same location?

After all if the club site has say 100 pitches and the AO site only 30 then there is no comparison.

Also are the two sites equal in cost and facilities? This will have more of a significant factor than merely being AO I would say? It could be the club site is non EHU and/or no toilets and therefore isn't as attractive to stay at (for most club members) or indeed in a non tourist area?

Corners I have been using Club sites for over 30 years, perhaps not as many lately but I do still use them if of value. The name of the sites and differences are irrelevant, I was just struck by the difference in occupancy levels when I moved and asked a simple question about CLUB  sites.  Judging from the responses so far it still would not entice members without children out at peak times at under used sites but is worth noting that only 18 percent of members have children under 16 years of age, so contrary to TW views it would not effect a huge proportion of members.

Personally like Husky I am not bothered either way.

Presently at Carsington Water CC. Arrived Thursday and site pretty full. Looked at weekend availability and it showed 8 empty pitches - all non awning for tonight.

You forget those who take grandchildren with them, PD, or have kiddies visiting for the day. I stand by my view that it would affect a huge chunk of the membership.

Whether I am right or wrong, such a move would certainly prevent certain members from sharing all the delights the club has to offer. That’s a fact.

I agree TW, it's surprising as the main season ends how many families, young and old, appear with pre-school age children. Only in the depths of winter sees a change in just adults having holidays.

I joined the club, for the variety of sites and the welcome it gives to all.

I've heard and read this year that many have withheld spending money on holidays and I think all sites, both club and non-club (except the most popular ones) will have seen a drop in bookings. So the club needs us all!

Yes TW  some members do spend time with Grandchilren in peak. I"'ve just spent 10 nights with some of mine but the numbers must be small after all many are moaning about prices.

Not sure what your definition of "many" is PD? Most of those who "moan" about prices seem to be those who don't use club sites anyway.

Going back to the point about whether the "club" is actually a club or not, I think it's irrelevant really. Everyone who pays the same membership fee should surely have the same entitlement to use sites? I can't see how it could possibly be otherwise!

The names may be irrelevant but not, as I asked you, the sizes, location,  number of pitches and prices. These would be major factors in answering your OP. After all if we don't know the price of the adult only site how can anyone say if it would tempt then to go there?

I know you do not name the sites you talk about in these types of discussions but the ones I asked above you can surely?

It is very relevant what size sites are

ie two  club sites 40 miles apart one has 68 pitches this  Sat the other has zero both sites have toilets/showers
