We are looking at a short tour (3weeks) of south east Scotland and would welcome advice on places to visit/things not to be missed.

Our first stop would ideally be near Glasgow to visit the city and also the Falkirk wheel and the Kelpies and then moving on to Stirling for our second stop and then onto St Andrews.  Are hoping to move onto the coast around Perth/Dundee.  Have visited Edinburgh previously so will give that a miss.

Don’t think we will be travelling further north than Aberdeen but are unsure what route to take on our way south. one thought was via Yellowcraig and then Newcastle.

Any recommendations for CLs would be most welcomed.

Many thanks

If you're near Stirling you're in what's called central Scotland and you can head out in various directions. Don't miss Stirling Castle and the church of the Holyrood, you'll be near the Wallace Monument too. Views from the castle expand over what's known as the Carse of Stirling, far reaching views to the Trossachs. If you get time head for the Trossachs area and the Lake of Menteith. An area Rob Roy frequented on cattle stealing raids (amongst many!) Near to Stirling is Bannockburn, another good visitor centre with more history.

If you're heading for Fife don't miss the fishing villages along the Forth.

Perhaps someone can suggest a few CLs. Hope you enjoy your tour.

Natasha, for CLs try Fernlea at Errol, between Dundee & Perth. THere is also a brand new CL near Dundee, Greenacres, listed in the June issue of the club magazine. Between Glasgow & Edinburgh is Barbeth Fm, at Cumbernauld, No.1947 in SD....not used it but it has decent reviews, so you could visit both Glasgow & Falkirk. An alternative would be Beecraigs C.P. at Linlithgow, midway between Edinburgh & Stirling. Depending when you intend going they do 4 nights for price of 3 as a mid week discount out of high season. For St Andrews/Fife coast we use Monturpie at Upper Largo No.1954, but you could try Knockhill, No.1955, again not visited this one. South of Aberdeen we use Pitrennie Mill at Laurenkirk, No 1904, a nice but basic CL.

    Hope that this helps.

The Scottish Borders is in the South East of Scotland (where I live) Selkirk, Hawick, Kelso etc.  You could stay at Berwick on Tweed, not Scotland but it was at one time, and explore some of the lovely coastal villages, like Eyemouth.

There's a Club site at Melrose, a lovely Border town, see Sir Walter Scott's house at Abbotsford and do the 4 Abbeys tour - Melrose, Dryburgh, Jedburgh and Kelso - OK you've "done" Edinburgh but why not get on the new Borders Railway at nearby Tweedbank (plenty free parking) and take the train to Edinburgh - visit one of the Duke of Buccleuch's stately piles at Bowhill near Selkirk which also has some lovely walks.  Mountain Biking?  Some of the best trails in Scotland.

The Borders is often by-passed as people head for the grandeur of the Highlands (and I've lived there as well) but the Borders is a hidden gem. Drive from Selkirk to St Mary's Loch, which you can walk round and then up to the Grey Mare's Tail.  There's an easy path to the waterfall, or if you're into walking a steep climb up to the loch.

A much neglected but beautiful area in Scotland is Dumfries an Galloway.  We stayed at South Port ‘O’ Spittal cl with its stunning sea views over to Norther Ireland.

No idea what sort of CLs you might be looking for, but East Fortune Farm near North Berwick is very nice. NB is an absolute gem, has Tantallon and Dirleton Castle nearby, lovely beaches, Museum of Flight, with a Concorde. Another nice CL a bit further South is Foulden Hagg, stunning views and surrounding countryside, around four, five miles from Berwick, but actually still in Scotland. There are some great Northumberland CLs, much nicer than Old Byland, unless you want to see Newcastle.

    Thanks for all your advice.

We have previously toured the Northumberland coast as far as Eyemouth in Scotland and are looking forward to seeing the coastal section around North Berwick.

Just looked at East Fortune farm CL but the last 2 reviews are awful.  A noisy CL is something we will always avoid but thanks everyone for your other suggestions.

East Fortune also have a small commercial site with EHU but no toilets/showers, and it is a bit further from the road so one doesn't notice the road noise so much there.

This is a lovely site, very quiet, but might be too far South for you.

Yellowcraig is very nice outside of school holidays, but we found it a nightmare when schools are off. You can walk along beach into North Berwick, probably a couple of miles or so.

For the Fife part I'd suggest Balbirnie - easy access for whole East Neuk of Fife - Crail, Anstruther etc etc Look up the Secret Bunker for a wee visit. One of the things about Balbirnie is nice village, couple great eateries and access to train so visit to Dundee or even Edinburgh easy peasy and best of all no parking to worry about.

Some of the information in two of my blogs may be of interest. We explored Fife for a week in 2014 from the Balbirnie site.

Although the second one is mainly about the west coast we did spend a week on the Black Isle in the east to watch the dolphins and ended up at Yellowcraig.
