On large sites there is also the case that the staffing levels are also less at the quieter times of their year, and it is not economic  to have all facilities open, even in the commercial sector the facilities are reduced with the level of available staff

Yes ,with a M/H the water side of it is much simpler ,but we have always used our onboard facilities probably due to my wife's mobility issues , but at the end of the day we all the site to the best that's suits us cool

I have noticed that many of the newer, or refurbished, toilet blocks have additional cubicles that are used to provide a service when either of the main gender seperated facilities are closed, and are kept locked at other times.  I wonder if the original poster has been confused by this.

....I dont think CC sites are 'customer focussed' in the same way as others with a larger resource are....

in fact, it's almost the reverse, with the whole site (customers) fitting in with the wardens' work schedule....

showers aren't cleaned when they're dirty, but when there is a slot in the  schedule.....so customers have to work around this...not a great inconvenience but fitting around the work schedule all the same.

we were at a commercial site a couple of weeks back and, despite being the busiest week in the diary, the showers never closed.

lots of other sites we use have an ongoing cleaning regime.

My take on this is that from JK’s perspective, standards are indeed slipping. Nothing to do with the perfectly rationally applied closing of a percentage of loos and showers, dependent upon visitors. More a case of some of the membership needing toilet training, and how to be a decent visitor! It mirrors the damage I found in LA Leisure facilities, tiny minority have no respect, but it hugely impacts upon all visitors. 🙄

The last site I was on in Cumbria had three facility blocks and where never closed for cleaning, device team just kept on top of it, always spotless, always open.

To add to that I think it's perfectly acceptable to close underused facility blocks out of the main season. I expect they are expensive to run and heat so as long as there is one open all is ok (by me. smile)

Now we are in Peak Season I would expect all units in all facilities to be open at all times except for cleaning or repair, and the fact it needs repairing to be posted on the locked door.

Even in low season it would be a courtesy to post a note explaining WHY a unit or block was closed.

Even in low season it would be a courtesy to post a note explaining WHY a unit or block was closed.

We don't use CC sites on a regular basis and only then during the low season. If a toilet block has been closed we are always informed of such when we book in, Clumber being a prime example. On other sites with only one large toilet block we often see that some of the cubicles are closed and it's obvious, to us at any rate, that that is because of the low number of visitors using the facilities.

So looking at some of the replies it is obvious that several of us have seen and experienced what the OP is complaining about. I think it is the way he chose the heading that has caused disdain.

What is interesting in this post is that within 30 minutes of the post starting and only 5 replies a moderator thought fit to say, " I see little point in continuing this thread as members here aren't best placed to discuss Caravan and Motorhome Club policy and can only speculate as to the situation on any site at any one time. Best that you communicate with the club direct for an informed answer to your question."

However the post has continued and it begs the question, Will the club give an informed answer to the question? Is there a directive to wardens to carry out this practice.

Your last paragraph :- No and Yes.

If you're not inconvenienced in any way due to a facility being closed, then I don't really see an issue. If however you are then the on site staff would give you a full explanation.

In low season i would think it was pretty obviose when a site a block would be closed if the site is not busy ,when a block would only need the heating on to keep it dry ,rather than possibly 3 or more large hot water boilers running as well, and probably with less staff to keep the rest of the site running as well

Equally, I'd think it pretty obvious in peak season that a locked cubicle would be out of service for some sort of repair. Do we really want our wardens to spend time sticking notices on doors?

A locked toilet door with no explanation could have someone in a health emergency jammed behind it.

Or someone playing games, just takes a second to give a reason its closed.

    Jk

Thanks for your input. I said in my first post I had seen this situation but it didn't bother me.

It did prompt my question at the end of my post to which you have answered. I presumed the 'No' and the 'Yes' know tells everyone that as there is a directive then it seems to be up to your discretion.

I hope this answers LawrenceD's original post

I stayed on a site of the Camping and Caravanning Club just before Christmas last year and there were very few pitches occupied.  The toilet block is basicly a central corridor with showers to one side and toilet stalls to the other.  Not only were all but the first three doors on each side locked, the lights further down did not come on with the others on the movement sensor.

A private site I use goes even further and has a partition and a door about half way down.

If standards are slipping, you need a sharper spike on the end of your flagpole.
