Been looking at purchasing a new Motorhome and been informed that there are plans to increase first registration fee to a figure over £2000. Has anyone got any information on this?

According to this document the first years licencing rates are £2000 if emissions are in excess of 255 g/km. I wonder whether this applies to motorhomes as tax and VED rates are the same as commercial vehicles, one rate up to 3500kgs and another for vehicles of 3501kgs and above. If that remains the situation even the additional tax for vehicles over £40000 in value would not impact on motorhomes? Unless anyone knows differently!

The high first reg fee has not applied to MHs up until now so I’d not worry about it. Even if it is introduced, I don’t think £2k extra on a £60-£70k MH is going to make a terrific difference to a buyer’s outlay.

Sounds like the Treasury have just latched on to another income stream.

Or a way to kill an increasing market stone dead, new car sales look increasingly sick due to stupid new taxes...I would have changed my Toyota Yaris petrol by now (£30 annual road tax) but not while new vehicle taxes are SO confusing.

My understanding on Motohomes though is that their emission level is NOT on the V5 logbook, so the new confusing tax levels do NOT apply ?

Will we see a sudden flurry of re-application for C1 and up-plating of vans will this kill off the UK motorhome industry?

As this would appear to be a EU directive, will we have to worry after 31 October?

It certainly puts a different slant on driving a heavier motorhome and retaining the C1 licence.

of it applies to vehicles upto 3.5t (and this is the weight you wanted to, ultimately, drive at) wouldn't you buy a van on the light chassis and get the dealer to upplate it (FOC) at purchase and register it at (say) 3650.

take the first year VED at the cheaper rate and then get the van replated (paper job) back to 3500kg...
