Hiya...

So after 3 years we are going from a Caravan back to a Motorhome..

So so torn, got about 40k to spend. Am I best looking at a new Eldis or Compass or something used, but better quality, Bessacarr, Burstner etc?

Any thoughts?

Thanks

£40k+ would buy you a wonderful 'upmarket' used MH, something that was, perhaps £70k or so new....so how about a nice Hymer, Carthago, Rapido, Adria, Pilote or as you say Burstner?

the continentals build proper 'winterised' MHs with internal water tanks, and (often) double floors with the plumbing and electrics all out of sight between the floors which also give extra storage.

or a nice nearly new PVC....a uk van with rear side seats (lounge) or a continental with a rear bed and storage under....

if you buy new, at that budget it'll be a cheaper uk model (compass, Elddiss etc) or one of the new German sub brands like Sunlight and Carado from parent companies Dethleffs and Hymer.

layout will be a determining factor but so should quality....real, deep engineered in quality or the added on 'quality' of the latest new upholstery colour.....

i know where I would be looking.

Which make you choose is pretty academic and a personal choice but I’d not class a Swift offering as better quality than Elddis/Compass. They’re pretty much on a par in my book.

You're always likely to do better in terms of cost if you go for nearly new, or an ex-dem, rather than brand new.

I think you firstly need to find the right MH for you and then start looking at what’s available to buy.

I agree with BB. Go for a good used Burstner, Adria or Hymer.

    Hmmm

Thats kinda where I was going, but when I start moving towards those brands 40k - my kinda limit, doesn't seem to get much!

I belong to a Bailey Motorhome Facebook page and I have found it surprising that people seem to sell motorhomes of less than two years old because of a change of family circumstances. It might be worth searching for similar groups for the brand you are keen on to see if the same applies, you might pick up a bargain?

Lots of choice re back end bit but less re vehicle engine/chassis etc.   Ensuring paperwork/servicing is OK hopefully ensures reliability if buying used and the whole unit may come with a warranty of some sort.  Good Luck - Hope you find a suitable M'home.

The answer is surely what suits you best. A second hand one could be more upmarket and it is a question of if you want or need the extra. A new one though will suffer from more depreciation shortly after purchase but will give you a better guarantee.

There is no right answer though you have to weigh up the pros and cons of each and decide where you feel you are best served.

If you see a Carthago for £40K that isn't a wreck, do please let me know.
