Security and Spare wheel lock - VW T6
Hoping for some advice as the very new (2 days!) owner of a VW T6 conversion.
What are people’s opinions about the need for a lock on a spare wheel and any recommendations for a specific type/make?
Also, the van has a factory fitted immobiliser and a Thatcham Cat1 alarm - am I being overly cautious (aka paranoid) to also used a steering wheel lock ((Stoplock)?
Many thanks in advance for any advice

Hello and welcome to CT and our great hobby.
Personally I'd have a lock on the spare wheel and use a steering lock. Some folks are very partial to helping themeselves to others hard earned items! Hopefully the more visible the deterrent the more they are likely to leave yours alone.
Get out and about enjoying your new acquisition and tell us about your adventures, or equally, ask for advice. Were a friendly bunch in dite or in the other 😀

Just switched to a MH and to get insurance at a reasonable price we had to fit both alarm and tracker. There was no requirement or reduction for fitting an additional steering lock. This would tend to imply that the likelyhood of having it nicked with or without an additional lock is of similar risk.

Without knowing the location of your spare wheel or its fixings, I can’t comment on that aspect.
A steering lock, although probably overkill, is a great visual deterrent and a would-be thief immediately knows he’s got one more hurdle to jump. We use one solely for that reason. Our insurers (NFU) made no stipulations at all regarding security devices.

Mine has the factory immobiliser, Thatcham 1 alarm and a passive tracker. I also fit a steering wheel lock for its visual deterrent aspect. Short of welding angle iron to the wheels, there is little else that could deter and even that could be circumvented with a HIAB.
Back in my banking days, it was said that safes weren't impregnable but merely bought time, so in one sense physical deterrents are better than electronic ones.

Many thanks.
It’s located under the rear of the vehicle, must admit I haven’t looked too closely yet at the fixings but seems most people recommend a lock and it is potentially another deterrent too.

The under slung spare on my Dads Kia is susceptible to theft by cutting the cable it's attached to the car with. The anti theft kit (available from Kia) just prevents access to the cable by covering it with a large metal disc. Maybe if the VW spare is also widely stolen then VW might do some kind of anti theft kit themselves. 🤔
