New to caravanning and new member

Hello

We have recently bought a caravan and survived our first trip to Treamble Valley over the Easter holiday which we thoroughly enjoyed as a family. I’m still figuring out how this all works, so please be gentle with me. 😬

We have just booked our second trip for the bank holiday weekend which Is great also but I’d like to ask a question if I may. “Can anyone recommend any sites within Devon and Cornwall where you get phone signal”. 🤭 I know! 👎🏻  Caravanning would normally be a phone free time for us too, but unfortunately there are going to be times where my husband will be on call and will need to be available on his phone. 😢. Any help would be much appreciated and thank you for your time.

    Hello and welcome to CT and the world of caravanning! smile

    I think you were unlucky (as far as a phone signal goes) in choosing Treamble Valley as it is ...er... in a valley, hence the problem. If you return to that area any of the sites just outside Perranporth would be better from that point of view. Tollgate Farm just off Penhale Dunes is very family friendly and you'd definitely pick up a signal there.

    Is there any particular area in Devon/Cornwall you're planning on visiting? Sure to be lots of suggestions for sites (club or otherwise) if you let us know.

    Hello, Taffners, and welcome.

    Cornwall on the whole is remarkably well served by the mobile network. I pick up 4G (o2) in most places.

    I suspect Treamble Valley is a black spot because it is fairly remote and in a valley. 

    I haven’t used many sites in Cornwall because I live here but I know for a fact that 4G is available at the Godrevy site near Hayle and 3G/4G at the Marazion non-facility site.

    I guess you’re only really interested in receiving the basic speech signal and I think you’ll get this at most sites. Some site leaflets give this info and you can download them from the each site's web page. Failing that, a call to the warden should answer your question.

    Oh thank you. It was a bit of a stupid question then. 🤪 Being new to caravanning I had visions of every site being signal free. 😂 That makes things easier for my husband then. No particular places of interest, we are just planning to visit different sites to start off with and get the feel of the actual caravan and the things that come with it. We are looking at a weekend stay every other week, depending on weather forecast, local with about a maximum of an hour or so drive. It’s a big learning curve for us! Thank you so much for the information and advice. Really kind of you both.

    Also, don't restrict yourself to what some call "full fat" sites. There are lots of really very good CLs all over the country with facilities as good as main sites, but with only 5 vans you'll have a much more peaceful time, wink

    Sometimes, in certain areas you just have to find a bit of high ground to get a decent signal. Can recommend Marazion Site, very nice, lots to do and see not far away, and not overly expensive, but it is of course a no facility site. Godrevy is also a great location, this time with facilities.

    No problem and it wasn’t a stupid question at all. 

    I don't know what part of Devon you’re in but if you ever head for the lovely Stover site, you’ll find the phone signal very iffy.

    Treamble is probably the worst site for signal loss and it's a very steep invigorating climb to get one, we loved our stay there but it certainly kept us fit. After that other sites will be a doddle! wink

    Your question is really sensible.  Some 7 years ago we suddenly needed to know about phone signals, daughter was pregnant, and stopped going to some where the signal was poor. If you are interested in a site give the warden a call and ask. They usually know which company's signals reach them. A site in  mid wales has iffy cover but on certain pitches you can get vodaphone. (other companies are available). If the tv signal is poor, and most sites report this, the phone probably is. We have 2 phones , each on different providers and a 4g router for wifi with a third. So far we have found at least two devices will always work. Enjoy your caravan.

    Hi Tafners.  Never be afraid of asking questions.  We always use Globe Vale, near Redruth - not a Club site.  It suits us as it is relatively easy to get from anywhere in Cornwall from here, and we have used it for years.  They have a large number of full serviced pitched - hardstandings with water hookup, drainaway and electric hook up on each pitch, and we've never had a problem booking here.

    No problem with phone signal or internet on the phone.

    In many places where there appears to be no/poor phone signal there actually IS a perfectly good signal 20 or so feet above ground level. Nearby trees, buildings, caravans, hills can all degrade a signal.

    I have a long telescopic pole that will fit to the side of my caravan into the TV mast clamps.  When needed, at the top I put a waterproof box containing my mobile/wifi dongle. This set up is usually enough to give good Internet access, and if I really want to hear voices I can do VOIP using the BT application on the phone.
