Wharfedale or Bolton Abbey sites

We have never been to either of these sites is wondering which one would be preferable.  We are thinking of going in early August to meet up with friends on Masons Campsite which is also in the vicinity.  Using Google it seems that the Bolton site is surrounded by a lot of trees which may cause a hassle picking up a satellite signal.  The Bolton site is nearer to the Mason Campsite.

Wharfedale seems to have a lot less trees surrounding it and appears to be more open.  It is a bit further from Mason's Campsite.

Our issue is that we cannot go through Bolton Abbey due to the arch only being 2.8m wide as our caravan is 2.5m wide and 3m high.  We will have to go the long way around via Embsay and then turn either left or right.

If any one has been to either of these sites some feedback would be appreciated as we also have 3 small dogs with us.  I cannot find any reviews on any of these sites on the CMC website unless I overlooked the link.  Thanks.

We have stayed there, managed through the arch but we are not as wide as you.

No phone signal, but otherwise a nice site.

Not sure about approaching from the other side, a lot of the roads in the area are pretty narrow.

We were at Wharfedale last Autumn and the recommended approach is via the B6265 through Cracoe - thus avoiding the need to go through Bolton Abbey, indeed this is the only route one should take.

We have a large TA van and I seem to recall the approach was easy.

Whilst not big fans of Club sites, we liked this one mainly because of the generous pitches and a lovely dog walk around the outside of the site.  It was nice during the week but come Friday afternoon, I saw some of the most ridiculous driving I have seen on any site.  How some of those vans survived going over speed ramps at 20 mph, I don't know!

To me that means you have 0.3 meters clearance.  Which in Imperial would be six inches each side. More than enough.

The local service bus goes through the arch just fine.

Phone signal at Bolton Beey is a bit of a problem. Very nice site with perfect dog walking straight from site. As Nav says, the bus goes through every day.

A lot more option for things to do at wharfedale and no toilets or showers at Bolton if that changes things,we prefer Wharfedale.

I didn't find the phone signal at Bolton Abbey a problem ...... I simply didn't find the signal on either O2 or EE smile

I needed to e-mail a couple that were friends of ours and drove 2.5 miles from site to post office and village shop to get a signal and somewhere to park

Oh yes, there are!  There is a toiletblock at Bolton Abbey, if a little dated.

For the reasons given above, I prefer Wharfedale every time.  I approach from A59/B6265.

Have only been to Bolton Abbey and you can't beat it for walks in all directions. We enjoyed taking our dogs on the walk to the very nice estate café (the Pavillion  LINK) which follows the river. Also there is a nice little estate café adjacent to the site and the village is nearby. We got the bus to Grassington, a scenic journey to enjoy.

The bus goes through the Arch so I think most vans can get through too.

Going that way myself next week. Was wondering whether better to leave M6 at Junction 31 and follow A59 from there or whether to use M6, M65 and A56 to pick up the A59?

    Any advice folks

Good question and although I have a great dislike for using the M6 as it is always congested it seems we have no real choice.  Using M1 is about 20 minutes longer.

Been to both but prefer Wharfdale.  Great little dog walk round the perimeter, or you can climb the gentle slope up to the quarry where there are fantastic views. You can also stroll through the static site next door to the Gamekeepers Inn, where dogs are allowed in the bar, or down the access road to the duck pond and sit on a bench and take in the views across the valley.

A short drive up the valley is the Kilnsey Fishery with shop, cafe and pretty views, or back down to Grassington which is within walking distance albeit a sharp uphill climb into town.

We usually call at Skipton on the way then then the B6265.  Good road and only a couple of narrow bits in the last half mile before the entrance to the site.

M1 at known 20 minutes longer  versus  M6 and the high probability of being stuck behind an accident/breakdown for four hours.  Hmmmm . . . .  Decisions!

I think I will ask the question in a new thread rather than piggyback on this one. wink
