Route recommendation - M5 to Ilfracombe

Can anyone recommend a route from the M5 to Ilfracombe when towing a caravan. Google maps takes me along the A361 and through Barnstaple. Is this a sensible route?

    Hi, the A361 now bypasses the centre of Barnstaple and we towed around it last September with no problems Junction 27 off M5 and quite of lot of dual carriageway but does go down to 1 lane around Barnstaple and quite a few traffic lights/roundabouts but all signposted and onto Ilfracombe. Enjoy your break.

    It's not the only route but it’s certainly the most sensible as per Redkite's post.👍🏻

    You certainly wouldn't want to use the A39 via Porlock and Lynton!
