Car free pitching
We have just had a wonderful few days at Bladon Chains. The site was very damp, so in order to avoid damage to the grass, the wardens gave us mats to put under the caravan wheels. We were asked not to put cars on the grass, but instead to unload and then leave the car in the car park for the duration of our holiday. Everyone around us was happy to comply. How wonderful it was! Lovely and quiet with no traffic on the site. Is this an idea members could support long term?

I suspect it won’t be flavour of the month. 😗
lt wouldn’t have suited me for a number of reasons when I was a caravanner.
I understand completely why the warden did it on this occasion.

not for me at all, marginally, perhaps, maybe OK in lovely sunshine but not when it's cold and torrential rain.
Also I like my car next to the caravan when I can see it and get to it easily, I generally store coats and other stuff in it rather than have that in the van.
It would mean a radical re-build of sites to accommodate the cars on even a small site, never mind a large site with 100+ cars. Large costs for no return.
Also how are people expected to charge their cars from the van's electrics

I agree.

“Also how are people expected to charge their cars from the van's electrics”
good point!😁

I think the most important!

I understand the reasons that this was done on this occasion but I can't see it becoming common practice, nor would I really want it to.
Mind you, if it means the car park being used as a car park and not a glorifIed overnight transit area ...........!

I would love to be a fly on the wall when members arrive at the first site trialling an experiment where wheelbarrows are lined up in the car park for them to transport their luggage and groceries to their pitch.
But I might well switch Club Together off on that day - and for weeks afterwards till the storm dies down.

An absolute non-starter of an idea while trailer caravans have such a miniscule load allowance that 7/8ths of the kit gets transported in the tow vehicle. Can't have all that kit in the caravan at the one time either - there would be no space to live in.
I have seen photographs of sites "over there" with a small hut for every pitch. That might be a way to make it work, but I would rather find a hot tub in the hut at my pitch.

Stayed on 2 such sites last year in the Netherlands and 1 in Germany. "When in Rome" etc. Sure it was an inconvenience but I knew the reasons why and the sites provided small trolleys such as those found in garden centres to transport goods and/or shopping to your pitch. The Dutch ard very good at maximising available space.
On saying that I would prefer to have my car next to me on the pitch.

Even if there was an acceptance of the idea all Club sites would have to major redesigns and as its unlikely the Club would allow closer pitching it would mean a loss of pitches to have large enough car parks and major expense. Might work at Moreton in Marsh if you converted the child's play area and dog off lead field to car parks

I encountered such a policy once in Holland many years ago. It meant that I had no lighting in my caravan as it relied on the tower hookup for power. Fortunately it was high summer so I didn't spend long in the gloom. Won't work with MH's, of course, particularly if they want to go out for the day.

wow, is this a first, everyone agreeing?

Like others we have come across this in Holland, albeit many years ago. At the time it was not something we could consider and decide if we liked it or not as we were booked and holidaying with friends.
However we really did not find it an issue but maybe that is due to how it worked. You pitched your van and then your car was kept in the car park nearby but, if you needed to drop of people or items, shopping etc, that was OK but the speed limit was very low and adhered to by all.
All the pitch areas were grass only and had no 'roads' through them.
We had three very young children with us and it was great for them, and us, as they were able to play directly in front of the van with no danger of 'passing traffic'.
Would it suit us now? No it wouldn't for a number of reasons so we would not use this type of site by choice.

The affiliated site Chew Valley Park has a separate parking for cars away from the caravans should anyone want to try the idea!

Never done it on a Campsite, but it’s not uncommon to have to park car elsewhere if you take a cottage in a tiny but busy resort town. We had a gorgeous cottage in middle of Fowey one year, it was up a pedestrian only street. We had to unload at end of road, and then take car to car park, which wasn’t that close and up a whacking great hill! And pay to park. But we knew of this when booking cottage, so we just got on with it. Same in St Ives and other tiny Cornish places.
