Several times but you need to define 'best' as we all have different views on that.
Nowhere is very far from anywhere else and we usually opt for the club's Southlands site. Check out the packages of site and ferry offered by Red Funnel and you can also get a good deal on booking Southlands site plus ferry by ringing the club.

Been a few times with the caravan and now motorhome. As a caravanner, with a car, I would have thought that the Club site called Southlands would be an ideal choice unless you wanted more in the way of a swimming pool or restaurant etc? There are a couple of pubs within easy reach of Southlands one within walking distance at Newbridge and another a short car ride away, both have restaurants. The last time we went we stayed at Waverley Park at East Cowes simple because we wanted better access on foot to transport and shops. Although I have to say that the climb up to the site from East Cowes pulls on the old chest!!! There is quite a lot to do on the island. Best to book site and ferry at the same time as some very good discounts available. We have only used Red Funnel from Southampton to East Cowes but Wightlink run ferries from Portsmouth and Lymington. The IOW has a slightly old fashioned charm.

We have been to the IOW a couple of times abd last time stayed at the clubs Southlands Site. We really enjoyed it everything was within easy reach and the Pointers Inn in Newchurch was only a 10 min walk away also there is a family pub/restaurant just down the road that serves lovely meals. We booked the ferry and site at the same time through the club

Jo, Southlands, although inland is only a short drive to either Shanklin or Sandown where you’ll find beaches.

According to their web site the pitches are only 7x7 metres which would be small by Club standards. The beach is about a mile from the site.

According to your avatar you are in North York's ,if going to IOW and whether you book a package ,via the club or one of the two ferry companies i suggest you try not to do it in one day and stay this side of the Solent for at least one night
We do Southlands via the club and no beaches are far by car

There are a couple of large sites where you can walk to the beach. One is Nodes point near St Helens. Wightcliff bay, Bembridge and Thorness bay. These are all like the Park Resorts type. There is an independent one near Compton it is on a cliff, which means a hike to get back up from the beach.

Hi jo121, we have a special offer that's just gone live which includes ferry and a pitch at Southland Club Site. We also have discounts for members on ferry crossings. I hope this helps and you get to visit the Isle Of Wight. I used to live there, it's such a beautiful island!

We used Kite Hill, https://www.kitehillfarm.co.uk/, near Wootton Creek at the Ryde end for a trip late last October. It's a slightly curious site, with a village of permanent residential caravans, but across the middle of the large field was a nice row of EHU points, and a pleasant view, especially if the sunsets are good. It was good & quiet.
No marked pitches, you just choose your bit of grass.
It's well named Kite Hill... the wind can cut across!... and apparently it drains well. If we return to attend the Harp Festival this October we'll happily use it again. It wasn't too expensive. The showers were clean enough, somewhat functional, but their huge virtue was that in a blast of cold weather they provided endless hot water.
The warden/owner drives round each early evening to check, and collect the rent.
If towing, you'd need to approach from the main Wootton end, not along the back road. Even so, if you have a long 'van, care is needed on the sharp slope of the turn. Ours is only 5m, so went easily.

Just returned from 5 nights at Southlands. The site is immaculate with a wide choice of spacious grass or hard standing pitches.
£91 for the 5 nights and Red Funnel ferry, booked through the club, noon sailing in each direction £89 ret. I can't complain at that!
jo121, I sought advice through these pages about where to stay before sailing. As we were sailing from Southampton we were advised to stop at Mornhill overnight. Quite a nice site, and not expensive but both toilet blocks are somewhat 'tired' and in need of upgrading. Nonetheless, we had a comfortable night there and the Red Funnel terminal in Soton is little more than a easy half an hours tow away. I would recommend Mornhill for that alone.
My only gripe with the IOW is the roadworks were everywhere. You couldn't move for them, it was horrendous. And the stupid thing was probably 90% of the works were on the pavement or grass verge rather than in the actual road yet most had temporary lights where 3 or even 4 way control was the norm.
Come on Isle of Wight Council. If you want us to visit the island and bring much needed economic prosperity to your area, get a grip on the roadworks and reduce the disruption to the absolute minimum!

We've just returned as well and only saw one set of roadworks as far as I can recall and we were out and about every day. Those works closed a road but it reopened after only one day instead of two. In the event of works on the verges, the workers have to be protected from passing traffic on those narrow roads and I'm sure the Council will be aware of that need.
Far worse than roadworks are the traffic jams in and around Newport in my opinion.

Haven't driven on the IOW for over fifty years. The roads are more country lane than highway and Newport is a nightmare bottleneck. Since then I've always used yachts and buses.
