Northumberland & Scotland East Coast

We're planning our first longer trip away in our new Motorhome having just done single nights locally. We love Northumberland and thought to extend our trip up to the East coast of Scotland. Ideally, we'd like to be on the coast, sites with good amenities, dog friendly and if possible the ability to take local transport somewhere. Any ideas or recommendations would be gratefully received.

I don’t know how far north you want to travel but the club site at Stonehaven might suit. You can walk into town and the beach is within yards of the site gate. Check out Google Earth.

One of our regular sites in that area is the Clubs Berwick Seaview site. Its one of our favourites with excellent sea views and good facilities also it is within walking distance of Berwick town centre (20 mins) but there is a bus goes in to the town too. There is a decent little pub 2 min walk from the site and an excellent beach within easy reach. Slightly further up the coast is Yellowcraig Club site in North Berwick again this is close to the beach and not too far from the town so should be ok with the motorhome.

    Hope this helps.

Oh Yes at TW says the Stonehaven site is excellent we visited it last year for the first time and are planning on going back. It too is right next to the beach and within easy reach of the town also I think there is a bus nearby that goes up to Aberdeen.

YellowCraig just short of Edinburgh should fit the bill. It has direct access to the beach with a decent bus service into Edinburgh and a few places to eat in the village.

The aircraft museum at East Fortune is worth a visit wit Concord as the centre piece although you will nee to drive there.

Thee are a number of commercial sites at St Andrews which is worth a visit.

Concur with previous suggestions. Your choice of the Scottish east coast is a good one. Often neglected in favour of the highlands.

Consider Edinburgh CAMC. It's close to the river. Great regular bus services 15 mins walk; 27 into and across the city, 16 to Britannia at Ocean Terminal. Also private minibus from site to town.

Over the new Forth crossing and along Fife coast well worth the trip. Northern section Elie to St Andrews, known as the East Neuk really nice.

You will find a string of old fishing villages along the Fife Coastal Path mostly linked by the 95 bus to St Andrews

Good commercial sites, several in St Andrews. Personal favourites Silverdykes at Anstruther and Sauchope at Crail, both sea view and walking distance to village and chippie.

Crossing the Tay into Angus, the new V&A in Dundee is very popular. Then along the Angus coast to CAMC Stonehaven as mentioned, or perhaps divert over to CAMC at Forfar Lochside, handy for the town and Glamis Castle.

If Stonehaven is far enough north, returning via royal Deeside and the A957/A93 is picturesque. Calling at CAMC Silverbank, Banchory, close to the town and Crathes Castle, or Ballater community run site on the Dee and thence to Balmoral, if open, or onto the old CAMC Invercauld site at Braemar, again in the village. Then a nice run over the A93 at Glenshee and down into Perthshire, the M90 or A9 and a good run south.

Some lovely sites in Northumberland, Walkmill near Warkworth, West Kyloe Farm, The Barn at Beal, both near Lindisfarne. Brock Mill Farm CL, Foulden Hagg CL, both good for Berwick. Can’t remember name of CL near Alnwick......

There's a small commercial/CL at Upper Largo, Fife....Monturpie, by name....which has it's own restaurant, you can catch a bus from outside the entrance to St Andrews, and can walk down from the site to the Fife Coastal Path. There are some great unspoilt coastal villages to visit in Fife.

Thank you for your kind words. I shall bore everyone stupid some more about visiting Scotland. If you cannot advocate your own neck of the woods to others, it's time to move.

Someone has just prompted me to another CL......East Fortune Farm, you can walk to see Concord here!

Check out the very good local rail link between North Berwick and Edinburgh Waverley. You can stay on the really nice, super for dogs Site at Yellowcraig, but visit Edinburgh city centre very easily.

Unless I have missed it no one seems to have mentioned Old Hartley just north of Newcastle and Whitley Bay. There are good walks from the site and regular bus services into Newcastle and Blyth. You will need some levelling blocks but every pitch has a sea view. Some pictures here http://www.davidklyne.co.uk/old_hartley_cmc_site.html

It’s certainly a very different Club Site DK. We liked it for a short stay, couple of nights, it was our starting point for two tours, one down Hadrians Wall, one further up the Northumberland coast. The Newcastle Metro is excellent for getting around. Good site for dog walking and cycling. 😃

Not on the coast but Melrose may be worth a look at great riverside walks along the Tweed right in the middle of town dog friendly loads of places to eat.

It's certainly worth following the Tweed as it meanders up into Scotland, I agree Melrose is worth a visit.
