ET is correct on this, minimum booking period not only does it effect Braithwaite Fold, also along with their two Keswick's sites.

People who tour tend to prefer to be able to book prior to arrival, If you turn up at peak without booking and want EHU tough. If you don't want EHU you might have more luck

I take it that you do not know the site. When I was there in May the 4 grass pitches outside the main barrier were taken up. Not any use to a weekender who wants EHU which must be over 90% of weekenders.

    Dut you'll be fine.

No preparation for me David. Caravan always packed along with toiletries etc. Only thing to come in was dirty clothes for the wash and fridge stuff. If clothes were not replaced it was no problem as there was more inside the caravan and the same with kids toys and toiletries.

Biggest job was to take a bag of perishables out of home fridge to cool box in car and hitch up - 15 mins.

As we were early risers it was no problem to breakfast the kids, drop van off at home and for me to carry on to work on Monday as OH either did not work or worked part time evenings.

yes caravan is already ready to go, we used to buy food before a trip but we always used to bring it back seeing better stuff while out and about so now all we have now stored is a tin of baked beans and sausages for emergencies only that has been there for a few years (must check the date on it actually). Tea, coffee, sugar is always there, bedding and towels likewise, and even a few clothes. Toothbrushes are un-used new ones in their packaging which we throw away after each trip.

There is always bound to be a greater demand for weekend days. At a weekend pitches are required by those who work Monday to Friday, but they are also needed by the many of us who are retired and who are away for longer periods covering both weekdays and weekends, so the demand can be double. As for booking a whole week, we never stay for seven days in one place, we rarely did when we had a caravan either, always a few days and move a bit further on. Yes we book months in advance, we have bookings all the way to November, some of those cover weekend days as we can be away for long periods. Some of our bookings are with the Camping Club, deposits have been paid in advance, it doesn't matter in the slightest to us. We simply book early because we can. PS.. it can also be difficult to get on to the Camping Clubs most popular sites, at weekends, and school holidays despite their T&Cs requiring minimum periods of booking at some sites and times, AND deposits..

Actually the site foes not list Grass pitches but there was an area outside the gate where up to 4 outfits were pitched and used site facilities.

I'm not convinced this post isn't something just to get people arguing and meant to annoy some just for the sake of it.

You could have someone argue that the weekends are fully booked because the pensioners and retired people have booked the sites and blocked them from those who work for a living going to enjoy themselves for a couple of days. How inconsiderate of those people to book weekends when they have all week to go camping and leave the sites free to the workers come the weekend 😂😂

Just book when you can and enjoy, stop worrying about you haven't got and can't do and start to enjoy what you are lucky enough to be able to enjoy. Life's too short! 😎

I, and many others, still do the caravan touring where each site is used for only a few days before moving on the the next one.  I am completely lost as to where the OP might think I would be able to stay at the weekends while following this sort of itinerary.

When we worked if we couldn't get into a club site within a 2 hour Friday night drive we would use a CL. Over time we found that we reversed the equation, trying CLs first. It's only a weekend, it won't kill you.

If you are wanting to bridge for a longer holiday then read the reviews on CLs with service pitches and showers if that is what you need. You need to be flexible otherwise you'll just become frustrated.

We're similar, but need about somewhere in the region of 35-40 a year....one of the reasons for using CLs for them outwith the winter months.

We used to weekend regularly before we took on the seasonal pitch, it was this aspect which made our minds up.

The little site we are on no longer accept's tourers, it's a seasonal pitch site only, but before this the weekend trade was high, the owner, now a friend, said at the time if it wasn't for this aspect of the business the site wouldn't be viable, which as this trade decreased coupled to the hassle of bookings etc he decided to close this part anyway and let out those pitches as seasonal.

Then when we actually tow the caravan, 4 times a year for holidays, we book Saturday for 8 nights to the following Sunday, or 7 to Saturday, this would book 2 weekends, so the overlap of people on week breaks, may in some cases be the issue, not just those who quite understandably enjoy a weekend break and book as such.

We chose to use a caravan as lodgings initially because of this such flexibility on offer, but now after a few years of this lifestyle we both, even though we live in a stunning modern house, actually prefer to spend the weekends in the van!

Over the closed season Michelle received another promotion, which means she is now back on the weekend rota after 2 years of not being!

This coming weekend is the start of the season on our site, guess who is working that weekend and miffed?

And then further guess who is going regardless? tongue-out

This is a problem suffered by all caravan sites both club and commercial. There are far more people wanting weekends than midweek and that is a fact of life. There is no easy answer although it could be partly dealt with by making some pitches only available for longer bookings  but it would need a trial to see if it works.

To me midweek discounts are essentially the same as increased prices for weekends as the effect is the same.

I can’t say I’ve ever really had a problem with it.  We can’t do weekends away because OH doesn’t get home from work till at least 7.30 pm on a Friday.  No point in going away Saturday morning and coming home Sunday morning.  We do go away on the Easter and late May bank holidays.  Never had a problem booking them, either.

We tend to take our holidays in one week blocks, so we don’t leave our cat at home (with a pet carer visiting) for more than a week at a time.  Still no problem.  We often travel out on a Sunday and back on a Saturday.  Even if we go on a Saturday, or for a fortnight (before we adopted puss), I’ve always managed to book somewhere we want to go.  It may be a club site, CL, or commercial site, but I certainly don’t feel  pushed out by the weekenders.

Think the OP is probably talking about a popular site, probably close to large cities....Peak District, York, Cotswolds ?  Sure if they look farther afield they would find something to suit.

Depends on time of year David. At this time of year some sites may have grass pitches not released for booking. For all I know if the weather was cracking the warden might allow those that wanted one to use one freeing hard standing. No idea

As the site you were on was Commons Wood that is at the moment being refurbished (might take longer now)the pitch situation would have been very "fluid" but as you were only sumising the situation then both your "comments"are probably wrong as it seems you did not as so many posters do not ,ask the site staff , who would give a more accurate answerwink
