Isle of Wight
Good evening everyone. I was wondering if anyone can advise on a stop over site for the Isle of Wight ferry from Lymington end of July. Our ferry is at 11am..Look forward to your suggestions.

Both Black Knowl and the Centenary club sites are near.
Around 20 minutes away if I remember correctly.

I have a 11am crossing in July so I am using the centenary site. I have used it before stay just a couple of days. I did try black knowl but they where full for the time I wanted. as Tinwheel says not far from red funnel at Southampton. A word of warning don't arrive early at red funnel as they will send you away as they did me. no where to park in Southampton with a caravan .I should have stayed on site longer. dave

Err, no, I said it’s not far from Lymington (and Wight Link) which is where the OP is sailing from. Myself, I’d not stay there for Southampton.

No worries. 😁

However if anyone reading this thread is going to the IOW via Southampton and Red Funnel your advice is sound, its happened to me.

I'm booked on the noon Red Funnel sailing from Southampton on a Thursday in mid March. We are staying the previous four nights at Henley Four Oaks.
I'm planning to leave Henley at around 9 to 9:30 that morning. Never having done this trip before can anyone advise if a 9:30 departure will be early enough for a comfortably timed arrival at the Red Funnel terminal?

I wouldn't like to say for sure, BVM, but remember you’ll be meeting heavy traffic in that commuter belt area and you need to think of the latest check in time rather than sailing time.

Thanks TW.
In the sites directory it advises those who are not familiar with Reading not to tow through the town. Looking at the map the obvious route would be the A4155 towards Reading then onto the A33 and ultimately onto the M3 down to Southampton, a journey of about 55 miles, of which roughly 28 miles is on the M3.
Would my proposed route avoid the "no go area of Reading for strangers towing a van" and if not could someone advise an alternative route?
Bearing in mind I'm proposing leaving Henley between 9 and 9.30 hopefully the commuter traffic will have subsided.
There again, if someone decides to so much as "break wind" on the M3 a 10 mile exclusion zone will be put in place then everything will grind to a halt. But we are used to that in this country anyway!

Green Pastures SO41 8LL. A pleasant CL on the outskirts of Lymington.

I was mid-reply last night when somebody pulled the plug on the forum.
I really can’t help, BVM, as I don’t know that area well. I’ve only been to HFO once.
I think for a noon sailing you will need to be at Southampton docks by 1130 at the very latest with check in opening at 1100.

You route is certainly doable within the time scale but it is the unknowns you can't always plan for. Any chance you could spend the night at Morn Hill at Winchester instead of Henley? This would give you an easy run into Southampton at leisure the next day. If you are in danger of arriving too early then there is a service area on the M27 which is a handy stop and from there to the departure point is about 15 minutes. The problem with arriving too early at the Red Funnel Ferry Terminal is that if they are busy (events on the Island) they don't have room so there is a risk of being turned away. Trying to find somewhere to park in Southampton with a car and caravan would not be easy. If that happens my suggestion would be to head back out to Millbrook and find a quiet road to wait. (Google maps or Google Earth would help) The ideal time to arrive is just after the departure of the previous ferry.

Hi bvm
I am from South Yorkshire and done Southampton many times for red funnel, my advise would be to rebook mornhill cmc site it is short distance from m5 place to eat close by and virtually all motorway into Southampton dock approx 30 mins.
Red funnel can be a bit funny if too early but the last services before the docks turn off the m5 is handy for killing time.
The other thing about Henley on Thames is a pint of beer and a glass of wine is £11 to £12 not your Yorkshire value and normally served in a plastic container if near river.
Have a look at the M1 to M42 to M5 route and morn hill site
enjoy

I would point out that the M5 references should read M3/M27

I did wonder…
CY, for you know if the grass and parking area still exists almost next to the RF terminal? Was it Mayflower Park? It made a handy parking place if too early for check in.

Ah, right. That’s been put in place since I was last there but that was over 20 years ago! Even limbo dancing won’t get us in there. 😋
Thanks, David.

Thanks everyone for the advice.
I think in Glyndwrg's case Green Pastures CL will be a good bet, but as I'm sailing from Southampton I think Morn Hill will be the better option for me. I've stayed at Morn Hill before so I know where it is. Having said that, the first time I went to Morn Hill I went sailing straight passed the entrance on the A31 and had to go a good way before I could turn the outfit round and come back!
C'tman, at 11 or 12 quid a pop for 2 drinks methinks a good selection of wine and beer from my local ASDA will be accompanying us from W Yorkshire to Henley on Thames!

No not really agree the route on into Southampton includes your additional info but as a fellow Yorkshire man he would know to check out the rest of the route.
matter of interest have you ever experienced the delights of Yorkshire and got an understanding of the Yorkshire intellect.

The only time I've been to Mayflower Park is for the Boat Show.
